It starts off at the hospital when Two-Bit and Pony have to beg the nurses to let them see Johnny, this is the first example of external conflict that will occur in chapter 8. Johnny asked the boys if he can have another copy of Gone with the Wind. While talking to Johnny, Pony learns that Johnny does not want to die even though he has talked about killing himself in the past. This would be an example of internal conflict, because although Johnny has talked about killing himself he is now saying he does not want to die. Pony tries to reassure him that he will be okay, but he knows Johnny is dying. This is another example of internal conflict. Pony has to hold back his tears making sure he does not scare Johnny by crying. As the two boys wait on Two-Bit to get back a nurse appeared at the door way telling Johnny that his mom is here to see him. Johnny explains that for once he does not want to see his mom. Johnny is expressing another example of external conflict. Johnny went cold and passed out just after. As the boys are headed to see Dally they hear Johnny' s mom try to explain why she needs to see her son, and the boys realize how bad Johnny actually had it at home. Once they finally got to Dally's room, they hear Dally arguing with the nurse about how he wants to go out and smoke; this is another example of external conflict. Dally tells the boys about how Shepard came to see him because he saw his name in the paper from saving the kids. Pony gets an apology from Dally from when he hit him after coming out of the church. Then Dally asked asked about Johnny, Pony was debating to tell Dally the truth or not. This is yet another example of external conflict. Once Pony told Dally about Johnny's condition, Dally asked for Two-Bit's prized possession. His black handled switchblade. On the bus ride home the boys discussed how the only thing holding Darry back from being a soc is the boys. Pony shows another example of internal conflict when he tells Two-But that he is kinda sick and he probably shouldn't go to the rumble, but he does not want to let the gang down. Once the boys got home they saw Cherry sitting in he Corvette. The boys went and talked to her and she explained to them that Randy was not going to show at the rumble because he does not want to fight with out Bob being there. Pony then asked Cherry "can you see the sunset real good from the West Side?" Cherry answered "Real good." "You can see it good from the East Side too," Pony said.
