Write about the book you chose for summer reading here! Please describe 1.where and when the story takes place 2.the qualities of the main character(s) (who are they, what are they like) 3.what you think students can learn from the book and 4. why or why not the book should be required reading for all of next year's new 6th graders! The title of the post should be the book title and author. Check out my example for the book Pride! Notice my simple introductory sentence: For summer reading this year I chose... Six sentences should be perfect! Optional: upload an image of the book cover or maybe image that connects to the story.

For summer reading this year I chose the book Pride by Ibi Zoboi. The story takes place in Bushwick, a neighborhood near Brooklyn, New York and is set in the present day. The main character, Zuzu, is one of many sisters. She has high expectations for herself, like going to a good college, and she admires her older sister Janae. Students who read Pride can learn about how when neighborhoods in New York change, some people have to move out and lose their communities. I don't think this book should be required reading because it is better for high schoolers!

For summer reading, I read Out of my mind my Sharon M. Draper. This story takes place in Spaulding Street Elementary School in Ohio and its set in the present day. The main character is Melody brooks and she gets a sister named Penny. later on in the book. She is disabled and she has to have a wheelchair but she is very smart. Later on in the book, she gets a new wheelchair that when she taps a word, it says that word and she gets to talk to other people. Some people are mean to her because she makes weird noises she jerks her arms and legs uncontrolably. I highly recomend this book. It was a good "read to bed" book!
By: Olivia Holland

For summer reading I chose Dragon's Keep by Janet Lee Carey. It is set in 1145 in Wilde Island, an island outside of England . The main character's name is Princess Rosalind Pendragon , she is heir to Pendragon castle. She is also very caring and ambitious . She also has a dragon claw for a finger .Because Her mom, the queen drank a dragon's egg to become fertile. What I think students can learn from the book is to never underestimate anything. I think this book would be great for kids who are ok with accepting death but for the others no because there is a lot of murder and death. By Alessandra Jordan

For my summer reading, I read the book Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. The book takes place at a camp for Mexican workers in California, during the Great Depression. The main character, Esperanza, lived in a large house in Aguascalientes, Mexico. She thought she would always have fancy dresses and big feasts. But when she deals with loss of a loved one, her family must flee to a worker camp for safety. People who read this book can learn about Esperanza's journey through life, and the challenges some people had to face. I think this book should be required for 6th graders because it was informational and great book overall!
-Marley

For my summer reading I chose Waiting for Normal by Leslie Connor. The story begins in Schenectady, NY with a girl named Addison Schmeeter who is the main character. She lives with her mom alone in a trailer next to a mini market. She takes care of her 2 little step sisters and likes to wright down vocabulary words in her notebook. The relationship with her mom is RUFF and all she wants is to be "Normal'. Things that people can learn from this book are to keep your hopes up even if things are different than you hoped and that other peoples lives might be harder than yours. I think this should be apart of the incoming Bosque Bobcats reading list because it can bring hope to people because their lives could be worse.
-Rainey Kreutzian

For summer reading this year I read The Only Road. The Only Road is an amazing book based off of true events about two cousins named Jaime and Angela. These two characters are trying to get to New Mexico to live better lives with their cousin/brother,Tomas. If you are wondering why they wanted to leave their nice little village in Guatemala, this is due to the evil gang lurking in the village out to kill them. This gang has committed numerous crimes including illegal drug selling, kidnapping, and murder this includes beating and killing Jaime's other cousin Miguel for not joining there awful group. Although it does not end there, recently they had sent a letter to Angela, Jaime's cousin, claiming that Angela and Jaime must join their gang or die. Of course they did not want to do either of the two options and neither did their parents. Jaime and Angela's parents, aunts uncles, and grandmother got to work gathering enough money to get them to America. Soon they said goodbye and set off to New Mexico. On this journey, they faced many troubles and made many friends. The moral of the story is to not treat people badly. This is a great book and I recommend it for incoming students. Also, I would recommend reading the sequel, The Crossroads, which explains Jaime's life in New Mexico were his passion for art might just save the day.
-Garrett Gillen

This summer I chose Out of my mind by Sharon M. Draper. This particular book takes place in Ohio and the story is placed in present times. Melody is the main character in the novel and she is an 11 year old girl who is disabled. Melody is really smart but is not able to talk because of her condition. From this book students can learn to not take walking or talking for granted because not everyone is able to experience the little things we get to experience. They can also learn from the book that it is never okay to bully or make fun of just because of a condition they may have. In my opinion this book should be required because it is an eye opening story about how you should never take things for granted.
