"I fight the world and take all they can give

There are times my heart hangs low
Born to walk against the wind
Born to hear my name
No matter where I stand I'm alone."  

The line "Born to walk against the wind" reminds of the line from Beowulf where it talked about Grendel not touching Hrothgar's throne because it is holy and he can never know God's love. "No matter where I stand I'm alone" applies to Grendel because he really doesn't have any one to be friends with. The only people that remain constant in his life are his mother and Hrothgar. But he despises Hrothgar because he needlessly killed and tortured his father in front of him, then chased him up to the edge of a cliff.

The epic poem of Beowulf is from roughly 1500 years ago. People use the text from Beowulf to teach lessons of leadership, motivation, trust, respect, loyalty, etc. While some people think that the poem is about Englishmen, it is actually about their close neighbors, the Germans. The era in Beowulf is when we see the start of formation of nation states. That is, a tribe or several, finally settling down in one area that they will call home. These nation states will be lead by the tribal leaders or tribal sub-leaders. Also in this time period we see the start of the feudal system. The feudal system is what held society together. It separated the peasants from the royalty and so forth. the people of these nation states had an obligation to provide counsel and military aid, as long as the ruler provided protection and generosity in return.
