400s BCE - Samnites take over Pompeii

In the 400s BCE the Samnites took over the Pompeii area. The Samnites were Oscan people from the central Italian mountains. Their location made the Samnites great shepherds which made them want to control the Mediterranean, where Pompeii was located. They turned Pompeii into an extremely successful city (Merola).

90 BCE - Romans take over Pompeii

In around 90 BC, war broke out in the Pompeii area. The Romans were able to defeat the Samnites under Lucius Cornelius Sulla. From then on Pompeii was reliant on Rome for political, economical, and social matters ("The Founding").

62 CE - Earthquake

In 62 AD there was a devastating earthquake that left Pompeii destroyed. The current emperor, Emperor Nero, waned to rebuild, but it was never completed ("The Founding").

79 CE - Vesuvius erupts

Vesuvius erupts and it preserves the city, but kills everybody left in Pompeii ("The Founding").

1997 - Pompeii becomes a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Pompeii became a world heritage site because of how well it was preserved, how it provides an image of Roman life, and shows what the Roman settlements were like. There is no place that has been preserved as well as Pompeii has. Not only were the buildings preserved, but also paintings around them. This helps show what life was like for the Romans. There are several aspects of Pompeii that were preserved that show how Romans lived. Some of the best examples are in the villas surrounding Pompeii. These are all perfect examples of Roman settlements and they show the exact moment of when Vesuvius erupted ("Archaeological Areas").

18th Century - Pompeii is discovered
