Sometimes, when people want you to listen to them, they would like you to hear their thoughts and emotions, instead of you saying your own problems or why you think their problems are not very significant to you, although it is to them. When someone vents to you, it shows that they trust you and would really love for you to help them by listening to their problems, which is when silence is golden, as right now the main voice isn’t yours, but theirs.

However, sometimes silence may not be golden, like when you are having a group project and your group members want to hear your thoughts. Group projects rely on teamwork and the group mates abilities to work well with one another. If you do not share anything with your group mates, they will not know whether you like their ideas or not and you cannot go forward. This is when silence isn’t golden, since your group needs you to voice your opinions and experience in order for everyone to excel together.

Unlike non fiction books, which document happenings and findings, reading fiction books is a chance to be transported into a whole new universe and feel the exhilaration of seeing into the window of a make believe land. Fiction books offer comfort, as authors can shape the characters to have personalities and personas that are similar to ours, allowing us to emphasise and understand these characters. Even if these characters are make believe, and the plot is merely fantasy, it does not change the impression and morals that we learn from these books. Just because a book is fiction doesn’t make it any less heartbreaking to see the protagonist go through pain and suffering, or watch someone die. The empathy we feel for the characters can be transferred to real life, allowing us to understand and be more accepting of people’s opinion and personality as we had a glimpse inside a character who is similar to the person. In summary, fiction offers us a respite from the world, and builds important skill like empathy as we can feel what the protagonist is going through. By shaping characters to meet the plot, it becomes more relatable, and more enjoyable to read. Through reading fiction books, authors can incorporate feelings and morals to teach us. Non-fictional stories feed the brain while fictional tales feed the heart. It’s not meaningless to be able to get a glimpse of another world, another life, or another perspective — if anything, this makes “fake” stories more meaningful if anything. Fiction speaks of distant lands and faraway galaxies, and I think it’s nice to be able to get away from the repetition of our mundane reality. 

Some may think that the storylines are confusing and difficult to understand, but it adds to the feel. Personally, I like having to read a book over and over again because when I spot the clever hints left by the writer and everything starts to connect, it gives me a sense of satisfaction.
