This is the finished Notan #1. I used a photograph and cut the negative space out from the black paper to flip the design. It reminds me of a playing card. I think that by including the tie detail that I was able to improved the visual interest.

This experience was fun but slightly difficult. I had difficulty cutting some of the designs I made, I almost cut some of the designs in half. I also struggled with the smaller designs since they were small. I actually did a similar activity when I was in high school, I did more designs since I had an X- acto knife. I used 4 sheets of paper, pencil, scissors, and glue.

I was really excited to work on this project. I had a design in mind but as I was working on it, it just didn't come out right the way I wanted. So I just went with it.
The supplies I used for this notan was 1 white sheet of paper, 1 black sheet of paper, a white color pencil, regular pencil, scissor, ruler, and glue.

I wanted notan #2 to be special, something that came from my heart and represented family. For each cut one would represented my husband, two boys, and myself. Making it a total of 4 cuts for the four of us.

I love the symbolism of the four cuts representing the members of your family! But instead of having the four parts all glued to the left of the “hinge”, you could alternate flipping them to the left and right to maximize the effect. Do you know what I mean? Give it a try and post another version of you can! I’d love to see it. - Professor Gregor

So I realized I am far better at tracing (outlining) objects with a pen or pencil at this point in my life. My scissor skills need some skills. I also need some bigger scissors. I like the concept and tried multiple times before ending up on these two final pieces. I was really ambitious initially and ended up discarding a couple pieces I thought I was capable of completing. I tried drawing and cutting a bridge which I thought looked like a kindergartner finished, then a baby ripped apart, and then I tried to paste on paper. Overall a reality to my art skills were shown today to say the least. On this piece I just named "The shooting star over the mountain range" I tried to simulate a landscape scene with mountains, clouds, a shooting star and a tree. As I am typing this I noticed I glued the "Shooting Star" off point too. So my hand eye coordination needs some improvement as well.

This is a tribal and surfer inspired piece. I like the attempt at making a palm tree and ying/yang type of symbol. I love the beach and visiting Hawaii. I hope you all try to it enjoy as well.

I actually had a lot of fun doing this project, it did take me a good amount of time but I have never done and art assignment like this and I really enjoyed it. I did have some difficulty from some of my corner pieces but overall I think it turned our pretty good especially for my first time. For my materials I just used a ruler, construction paper, a glue stick and some scissors which I all had laying around my house so it made it easier for me to complete this assignment.

This was the end result. I had no real imagae here. I was going with the flow and it actually went okay. The swirls at the top were actually really hard to do I had to use a box cutter which made it look a little worse... but I think overall it was fun to do and I ended up having another idea for my second.

This was the end result for my second notan. It didn't go as well as I thought it was going to. I had strawberry lemonade in mind while making this. It is my favorite beverage, or one of my favorite beverages so I was inspired by it. The lemon on the right and strawberry on the left. The top and the bottom were supposed to be leaves, but it kind of ended up looking like fire. Although it didn't turn out how I wanted it to, I still like it.

I chose to create Notan #1 using snakes although it did not come out how I expected .. I feel that being able to have a swivel of a blade or scissor with a swirl cut would have made these a bit more snake like appearance but overall I'm excited to have tried something new and my whole family was interested. for this project I used black construction paper , white printer paper and glue.

I started off with puzzles pieces to show it is unfinished and searching for the right piece that fits, as a puzzle does. I enjoy arrows as they can lead to anything! A cloud because I enjoy the beautiful sky and how a cloud can help you on a sunny day but also can rain on your parade, the best of both worlds.

This begun as drips, I like the way it drops into the bottom like it’s gooey slime easing it’s way down. I was a bit more random on my second one and just went crazy and did whatever shapes or movements that came up in the moment.

This actually, was my second notan because the first one didn’t came out good. I think it was to small and it was hard to cut with the utility knife. Specially round shapes. I could have added something else here I feel like is missing something. But I still like it.

This is my favorite, after the first try I was scared to draw a too complicated notan for me to cut. I had fun with this one adding more shapes. I wonder if having a X-acto Knife would make the work easy for a more complex notan.

Here are the materials for my first notan. It was difficult to cut out the shapes with hands shaking a bit and using big scissors had me make slight mistakes that I had to incorporate them to my work. Not bad for first time. I got creative by using items on my desk to draw my shapes and steady my hand to cut.

Here is my first completed notan. Honestly, I was nervous about how’d it end, but the result ended well. The shapes represent my life with the “wifi bars” being my family, no matter how far we’ll remain connected, even in bad times. The 8 represent the possibilities of options around me and those I interact with. The diamond could represent my potential, it’s rough but I got the making to be successful. On top I was trying to make rabbit ears, but ended to them away so I adapted them for something else. I guess the rectangles and the now cone shape triangles stand as my individuality and show I’m not fully good or evil, and that I’m both. Looks well for the first time! This was inspired and based upon my family.

Here are my second notan materials. Slightly better and fewer errors. Added a little more creativity and thought into what the shapes would represent and mean. There were some shaking hands but I put more patience to cut out the rounded shapes. Had a few close calls in losing the smaller cutouts. I took some to trace out the shapes and thought to cut out. Had to use a ruler to more clean lines for cutting

This is the halfway point for my first notan, which was much more difficult to work with than I expected. I used white printer paper for the background and pink origami paper for the base square, which cut very smoothly but was still tricky because I made some of my designs too small. The larger shapes like the tree were much easier to work into place though.

This is the finished notan, which came to be because I wasn't too sure if I could pull off more abstract elements. I definitely learned my lesson on making designs too small though since parts of the butterflies and the cat's legs got cut off or crushed as I tried to work them in. So while not as clean as I would have liked, this first attempt was a mostly-there success.

Here is my second completed notan. This time I took inspiration on myself for this one. I went more creative with the shapes and made them based on the ideas I put into the work. The shapes in a form of a clown on the left mostly represent my happy-go-lucky personality as I do want to as much enjoyment in the fun. On the bottom I messed up in the smaller shapes as I made them jagged, so I integrated them into the “emerald” and it came out alright. The meaning of the emerald means truth and love along with the hearts. The jagged shapes above are my obstacles and nightmares, that whisper lies and failure. I think I did a lot better for the second time!

For this notan, working with more abstract shapes and placement was a little more comfortable after the first attempt. I tried to move some of the pieces around so they weren't directly mirroring each other and made more of the designs larger to avoid the same mistakes as last time. The materials for this one are white printer paper and green origami paper, which was still a blessing to work with while cutting.

This notan was much more fun to work with given the larger designs, although I did try to make a spiral in the bottom right corner that didn't quite work out. Still, having elements that weren't mirrored such as the staircase in the top right was interesting to work with and overall led to a much more forgiving and exploratory experience.

The materials I used were white paper, brown wrapping paper, liquid glue, scissors, and a pencil. I found this assignment a tiny bit difficult since I didn't have a glue stick so it made the process rather messy. Notan #1 was easier to cut out than notan #2 just because the shapes were bigger and not as complex. Notan #1 was just about creating different fun shapes. Notan #2 was moreso a whole portrait of two people by a house under during the day. I especially liked doing notan #2 because it looks more-so like a full portrait. I also would like to add that an exacto knife would have been easier to do the cutting process as well. Overall, I thought this was a very therapeutic process, especially if there's some good music in the background playing! This definitely challenged my patience, but allowed me to just be in the moment.

I tried my hardest to be artistic and creative but I guess, it’s not as pretty or nice as I imagine it to be. But making notans, cutting off pieces of your puzzle and sticking it on the paper to creative it is a relaxing in a way to set off your mind on a long busy week I’ve had. I need more practice though, as my art looks like a 5yo made it.

My materials: a pencil, glue stick, two pieces of white paper and one piece of black construction paper.

My experience: While making these I aimed more at doing simple shapes. While complex ones are fun, this was my first time doing this kind of thing. So to be able to do this was really fun! The glueing portions was tedious, but being able to find the right side of the pieces to give it’s desired affect was like doing a puzzle. Which made me enjoy making them even more!

Doing this assignment was very fun! It reminded me of being young again and it was pretty easy to do. The only thing I struggled with was cutting out the smaller shapes without breaking them. I remember doing something like this in my art class in high school and loved it just as much. The materials I used were two pieces of white construction paper, green and pink construction paper, scissors, and some tape (because I didn't have glue at work). Overall, this was a simple and fun assignment!

Above you can see both in process and completed Notans. For this project my inspiration was fire and water. I really enjoyed how this project allowed me to be a kid again. My mother loved to scrap book and this reminded me of when we used to do that together. I used scissors and free hand cut most of my paper but I also used a ruler cut to make more precise lines.

The theme for this notan was the sky. It includes clouds, a rocket ship, a shooting star, and the moon. I used a ruler, construction paper, a pencil, glue stick, and scissors. This one was pretty simple, but I found myself struggling a bit. With the 3 strips for the shooting star and the cloud in the middle of the paper it was difficult to cut. Using an X- acto knife definition would have been easier to use for those parts.

To create both of the notans I used a pencil, scissors, and black paper. I wanted to get inspiration from my sister because she is very creative. Something I found really interesting is that when I was cutting the pieces I felt very relaxed and relief. I think I felt this way was because I just came back from work and just wanted to relax.

The only reason I used chapstick is because I didn't have any glue at home and chapstick was the closes thing that worked. The reason I chose to do hearts for one of my notions is because it reminded me of the power puff girls.

The theme for this notan was shapes. I incorporate circles, squares, triangles, and hexagons. The materials I used was a ruler, pencil, construction paper, glue stick, and scissors. This notan took more time in terms of cutting it out and putting them in the right places. I chose not to put anything in the center of the page like the first notan because it was difficult to cut out with the scissors I had.

This isn't the first time I have done this; it's been a while though. I did forget how much time you have to put into this because it took me an hour just to complete even though I thought I would get it done right away. The first two are my progress pics and last two are my final results. Some of the materials I worked with included my pencil, paper and scissors. I used white and yellow because I liked the vibrance in the yellow.
