In 1754 the Fort of Sant'Elisabetta was founded near today's city, so named to pay homage to the Empress Elisabeth of Russia who had ordered its construction. In a few years, due to its strategic position in the center of Ukraine, an inhabited settlement arose next to the fortress which in 1764 became the provincial capital and in 1789 was renamed Elisavetgrad . During the 19th century it became an important agricultural center, while between 1868 and 1869 the Kharkiv -Elisavetgrad- Odessa railway was opened .which further increased the importance of the city and favored the settlement of the first industries.

Located within the area of residence , Elisavetgrad also hosted a large Jewish community which in 1897 constituted the majority of the city population ^[2] . After the assassination of Tsar Alexander II , tensions and hatred against the Jews of Elisavetgrad increased considerably, so much so that the leaders of the community asked for the protection of the governor and the army without however obtaining anything. On March 27, 1881 , a violent pogrom lasted two days that caused deaths, hundreds of wounded, the sacking of synagogues and the destruction of over 500 private homes ^[3] .

In 1882 Marko Kropyvnyc'kyj opened the first permanent Ukrainian-language theater in the city. In December 1905 the Jewish community was hit by a second pogrom which again caused deaths, injuries and serious destruction ^[4] .

In 1924 Elisavetgrad was renamed Zinovievsk in homage to the Bolshevik revolutionary Grigorij Yevseevič Zinoviev , a native of the city. A week after Kirov 's murder the city changed its name to Kirovo and from 1939 to Kirovograd . During the Second World War it was occupied by the Nazis from 5 August 1941 to 8 January 1944 .
