The activists believed in a "laboratory for participatory democracy" system where the members of the group or country should be able to contribute to the significant decisions, not following the current representative democracy where the trust should be put in a single party for all decisions regardless of the public opinion, they believed that this system was flawed and was ignorant of the public consent.

The movement aimed at abolishing the current system, economic corruption, and immense gender inequality, led by a single party, that had no regard for the public. The Occupy movement had strived for a more inclusive system where the public could contribute to major decisions, having even a fraction of power over their own country, ridding the long chain of corruption by the 1% that possessed abundant wealth and power.

The main reason for the Occupy Wall Street Movement is economic inequality. In the United States, there was a large wealth gap between the rich and the rest of the people, leading to the unfair distribution of resources and opportunities in society. The protesters also criticized large corporations and the wealthy population for influencing government policies to favor the rich and powerful. College and University students were the major protesters, as there was a high unemployment rate and a very high increase in student debt. They felt that there were very few economic opportunities, making it difficult to pay off their student debt. The main location for the protest, Wall Street, was chosen because it is an important economic area in New York with a lot of economic inequality.

The Occupy Movement is a laboratory for participatory democracy, a term used to describe a space where people come together to engage in democratic processes and decision-making collaboratively. In such a democracy, with people from diverse backgrounds, everyone has their own perspectives and they actively participate in shaping policies and initiatives that affect their communities and societies. The key features of this 'laboratory' is inclusivity and empowerment. It represents a wide range of voices, helping with the inclusion of underrepresented people. It is also a very collaborative democracy, where participants interact in a very cooperative manner to achieve common goals. It amplifies the voices of the unheard and encourages open and constructive decisions which can, in turn, change society as a whole.
