It has gained such a negative connotation due to the fact that it has been misconstrued as a "man hating" cause. Miseducation on the social movement of feminism has plagued our society for years and continues to do so when false information is spread. The key words in this definition are "people" and "equity". Emphasis on the word people is important because it demonstrates that feminism does not seek to place females at a higher social, economic, or political platform than males. The second key word "equity" should not be mistaken for "equality". Equity ensures that the right resources are given to the right people. This term has since become a key term in sociology as it gives us a new lens to view people who do not only belong to one marginalized group. Crenshaw explains this as "Intersectionality is a lens through which you can see where power comes and collides, where it interlocks and intersects. It’s not simply that there’s a race problem here, a gender problem here, and a class or LBGTQ problem there. Women were seen as fragile and dainty and men had presumptions that they needed "rest rooms". just in case they became too dizzy or faint from working. Since the beginning gendered bathrooms have been used to push feminine/masculine stereotypes onto society. Not only are they not necessary for anything other than privacy, bathrooms in many crucial social spaces marginalize people whose outward appearance does not match their gender identity.
