Working on a neuro floor, I frequently see patients come in with stroke like symptoms, often needing a CT scan or an MRI. Depending on the type of stroke, the CT scan may not also provide clear result. However, the MRI is more sensitive and can differentiate between an ischemic and a hemorrhagic stroke. Although the MRI can take longer and may cause discomfort for patients due to loud noises and claustrophobic environment, it gives a detailed image that offers invaluable information. The MRI allows providers to not only detect strokes but also diagnose many conditions such as cancers, inflammation, internal bleeding and more.

An MRI is an imaging test that produces detailed images of tissues, organs and other internal structures. The MRI works when the magnetic field inside works with the radiowaves and hydrogen atoms in your body to generate detailed cross sectional images ( Moyaert, 2022, 1:17). The MRI can be used to diagnose a variety of conditions inside the body. MRI can be used to visualize the brain, neurological conditions stroke and cancer. it can also be used scan muscles and visualize blood vessel abnormalities. The article explains the MRI images are generated by the hydrogen protons. These protons have a small magnetic field and spin naturally. Outside the MRI, their spins are random, canceling each other out. When inside the MRI’s strong magnetic field, the protons align and spin together. As the protons return to their original positions after the impulses stop, they emit electromagnetic waves, which are detected to form an image (Gratzel von Gratz, 2020, p5). The loud noises from the MRI are from the gradient coils overlaying the magnetic field causing some patients to require headphones or earplugs. Some patients cannot have an MRI scan due to them having magnetic material in their body such as implanted pacemakers, neurostimulators or any iron based metal implants.
