Yesterday, you observed John deviate from the procedure.  This shortcut was a minor infringement that you accept would have no impact on safety. In your view, the principle that he applied judgement to the procedure was a slippery slope to breaching more serious safety procedures, and you are concerned that he might get hurt.  You had instructed him to follow the rules without questioning them. You overhead John complaining in the lunch canteen that the company has ‘petty’ rules and does not encourage innovation.  You think John is hardworking and enthusiastic, and want him in your team. You want to discuss this breach of safety and do not want to demotivate him.  

You think that John has a cavalier attitude towards safety and are worried that this could lead to more serious safety breaches later on, and he could get hurt.  You also think he should take work a bit more seriously and not spend as much time socialising. Even his bright choice of clothing and daily ritual of showing off his “happy socks” annoys you.
