The Great Depression put many people out of a job, so much so that the unemployment rate was 25% of Americans had no jobs. Many businesses and companies closed down. In order to combat this, the government created the Works Progress Administration that gave millions of people jobs. From the “vast majority of families on the relief lists will be given a job by the Works Progress Administration. Needy families without employable members will be taken care of by the County Poor Board and the City Department of Welfare, which is the normal procedure.” This gave people jobs and each family an income.

The project gave jobs to millions, while benefiting the economy. The tasks for the workers of the W.P.A. were to build schools, hospitals, and playgrounds. Jobs were also given to unemployed professionals to cook for the ‘American Eats’ project. For teachers, they were employed to teach adults and small children. To sum it up, there were a variety of jobs given to those unemployed involving large public projects. Despite how the Great Depression caused so many to become unemployed, it also gave them different job opportunities.

What did the people eat during the Great Depression?

During the Great Depression, food was limited so people didn’t have much to eat. There was not enough money to go around and it was common for people to starve. People couldn’t afford much meat and fresh products. However, people did what they could to survive. Even though they didn’t taste the best, “many of them have been handed down through generations and are still made by those who know of the hardships their parents and grandparents faced throughout the ’30s. We should be proud of our ancestors for making it through a decade of financial turmoil and coming out on the other side, not necessarily unscathed, but having learned what hard work and determination can do to help one achieve the “American Dream.””

Foods such as mayo and peanut butter were often consumed because it was cheap and filling. People ate rabbit stew, peanut butter onions, peanut butter mayo sandwiches, and hot water pies. People also began to eat packaged food such as macaroni and cheese, pasta, and canned foods. Yet despite the limited food, people still managed to have barbecues, picnics, and festivals. In these events, they ate rice, chicken, beef, and drank coffee. The list contains more expensive food, but still limited.

What was the effect of the Great Depression on children?

Due to the crash in the economy, the government cut funds that went into education. Since there was less money going towards schools, the amount of teachers and supplies began to decrease. Since teachers were sparse, the amount of children per classroom increased. Furthermore, schools closed or shorten the year since the funds were inadequate and schools could not sustain more than the bare minimum. Some schools began to reduce the curriculums in an attempt to save money. The quality of education has impacted many children where many “lacked basic skills like reading, writing, and arithmetic, as well as vocational skills” (Lynch). Although, a lot of children couldn’t afford to go to school due to the families need for money. This is an example of a negative effect of the Great Depression.

However, there were some positive effects. The Children’s Charter was created which recognized children’s rights. Unfortunately, many things did not change for the children, though the Great Depression brought more attention towards youths. Programs that were directed towards youths were the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the National Youth Administration (NYA). The NYA provided work relief for high school and college students. A W.P.A. program that helped children was the establishments for nurseries, which became pre-schools, providing the children care and education. All in all, the Great Depression affected many children in both positive and negative ways.
