The Poe Toaster is a tradition that began on January 19, 1949. Every year on Poe's birthday, a mysterious man enters the Westminster Church Yard, dressed in a black coat, hat, and a scarf that covers his face. He leaves a half-full bottle of cognac and three roses at Poe's grave. The roses he leaves are believed to be in memory of the people buried in the site of the Poe monument: Poe, Maria Clemm, and Virginia Poe. Out of respect for Poe's memory and the Poe Toaster, no one has attempted to reveal the identity of the mysterious visitor. However, there are many theories as to who the Poe Toaster is.

Gothic Literature Elements

Ever find yourself engrossed in a haunting tale about whatever scary ghoul, ghost, or witch, the stories about? Yes? Well then, you are most likely reading Gothic Literature. Gothic Literature has many different elements, although it is all based around a similar premise. For example, most pieces of literature that classify their reading as gothic would include death and decay, haunted homes or castles, family curses, madness, powerful love or romance, ghosts, and vampires. This ties into most of Poe's poems and stories since they too included some of the characteristics of Gothic Literature I previously listed. His stories will remain a staple in Gothic Fiction.
