Part of it is due to out upbringing and experiences. The other part is due to how our brain works. We all have implicit biases that shape how we view people and situations. Even Dr. Eberhardt, the expert, experienced some biased thinking when working with incarcerated students. These biases do not dictate our lives. Being open and aware is a step forward in overcoming our biases. We also need to be aware of any biases we may unintentionally impart on our students.

It also makes me think about how one interaction with the police can lead to have positive thoughts about the police or negative thoughts about the police. I feel that this also can apply to educators and administrators in the school system. One negative interaction with a teacher can make a student see their education in the negative but if they have a teacher who listens to them and works with them and makes them feel apart of the classroom can completely change the way they think about school.

In the first few chapters it was more about how our Bias influences our lives. How we look at different things and situations through a distorted lens. Also, that bias is not just about race it is so much more. It is how we think and feel about others based on skin color, age, weight, ethnic group, and even disability. It was interesting how we become so desensitized by what we are used to and not see how things are changing, even just around us. In today's readings and discussions we were more into how others feel about what we say and how we treat them more than the content that is covered. To say that this experience has awaken many emotions that I wanted to believe were nestled and buried deeply inside is an understatement. Much of the research presented was new, welcomed and liberating -because -you know what you know/feel !Upon the first exposure to chapters 4,5,6 my initial reaction was sorrow, anger and then feeling numb. The references and imagery discussed is not new to me because I have been fortunate enough to have learned that I cannot allow others' biases or stereotypic thinking to define me. My message to students is the same because some of their life's experiences have been mine and I know that education is the passport to FREEDOM.
