line works in a design in the following ways:
-directing
-dividing
-psychological effect
-optical illusion

Shape - geometric shapes and forms are measured and mathematically constructed.
Natural shapes and forms have an organic appearance
Silhouette = shape

Colour - is the effect achieved when hue, value and chroma are used together
Chroma is the purity of a colour
Hue is the name of a colour (one dimensional) ie. intensity

Texture - describes the visual, tactile and audible nature of a surface. 
Visual - light produces shadows, highlights and sheen. 
Tactile - differences in surfaces can be felt on the skin
Audible - the friction created by surfaces can be felt on the skin

Direction- horizontal direction shortens objects
diagonal directions suggest movement
vertical direction gives strength and balance, makes objects appear taller and thinner 

Size - small/ large contextually
in a design, may refer to the dimensions of the product, system or environment. 
it may also refer to the size of a pattern.
