The hacking subculture is thought to have started in MIT during the 1960. These students would fill their time by figuring out loopholes in the computer codes. Early in the 60s and 70s people saw hackers as people who would make information open to the public. Without hackers, the PC market wouldn't exist. People like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are considered hackers because they created some of the first computer codes.

Although there are a lot of hacker groups. The most well known hacking group in the world is Anonymous. This hacking group is represented by the Guy Fawkes mask and they have been around ever since 2003. Many people have been arrested for being involved in cyber attacks with Anonymous. Despite the fact that Anonymous has no distinct leadership. The only requirement to join Anonymous is if you say that something you did was in the name of Anonymous. Since many other hacking groups function in the same way, there is no shape of ethnocentrism in this community. Everyone's actions are based on their impact, rather than the identity of the culprit. This is an example of functionalism because people will get together in groups, in order to get more information out.

Hackers are constantly portrayed in a negative light in the media. There are many stories in which accounts have been stolen, sold, or deleted as a result of hacking. One of the most recent stories said that over 620 million accounts were stolen from over 15 different ratios. These people will often sell this information on the dark web.

Hackers see the most disagreement between another group of code manipulators known as "crackers". Unlike hackers, crackers specifically use their computer skills to cause problems in other computer systems. Crackers will often download viruses onto other people's computers, whereas hackers will simply find loopholes in code to have fun/help companies fix potential software problems. This is also known as "White hat Hackers" vs "Black Hat Hackers". This is an example of conflict theory because these two groups are constantly vying for control over webspace.

Folkways: One of the most well known hacking folkways was known as Project Chanology. In 2008, a bunch of anonymous hackers got together and protested the Church of Scientology. They would wear masks and have signs saying how corporations should be able to make religions and own its followers.
Mores/Laws: Hackers aren't afraid to leak classified information or break certain laws, in order to get what they want. For instance, Edward Snowden leaked a lot of information involving NSA and the programs they use to gather information.
Some people may view hacking as detrimental society, but keep in mind that most of the time, these people want to just get information out for the public.

Aside from recreational hackers, there are many hackers that believe information should be free to the public. Anonymous - a famous hacking group - mentions that their motto is "to look for answers to questions that are unanswered". The reason for this is that there is a lot of unreleased information kept by governments, organizations, and corporations that the regular person could benefit from knowing.
Material: Technology used to get information.
Non material: Information released by the hacking.

Hackers don't really operate directly under the orders of a head hackers. There are certainly groups of hackers, but the most amount of cooperation within a group usually arises whenever multiple members are unable to gather information by themselves, so they need to find others to cooperate with. In terms of economic structure, hackers will steal accounts from people by changing the passwords of those accounts, in exchange for monetary gain. Some people would charge about $20,000 to get one account.

In order to hack, the basic requirement is that one has a computer and has some understanding of computer languages. Some of these questions include HTML, C++, Java, and JavaScript. If a person uses HTML, they can alter how websites look or access hidden files from a website. Some hackers believe that the computer serves as a symbol for escape from the outside world because hackers will avoid social interactions, in favor of time in front of a computer.
