Each name has a symbol to identify whether the person is living or dead. A diamond means confirmed dead. A plus sign means missing. If a missing person is later confirmed dead, the plus sign is turned into a diamond. On the west wall, the symbol is before the name, and on the east wall the symbol follows the name. If someone was found alive, they would change the symbol into a circle, but there are no circles yet on the wall.
