I learnt how to use MateCat, which is recommended especially for small projects. It is a free programme that offers us the possibility to translate clearly in segments and generate a file when the translation is finished, we can also upload a TM, and create a glossary. However, be careful when uploading a TM, especially if it is a confidential project. Matecat warns that in this situation it is best to add a private TM - otherwise the confidential data from the TM will be downloaded to update the Matecat database. I learned how to create a new project, how to set the source and target language, how to upload files for translation. I also learned how to create a glossary. I don't know how to upload TMs yet and will be learning that in the near future. The programme also has other features, which I will also study soon.

I will now describe in detail what I have learned in MateCat.

According to picture 1, I know where to enter all the basic and necessary information to create the project and where to upload the file for translation.

In picture 2, I have highlighted in green the correctly uploaded file (this is what it should look like after uploading), and in yellow I have highlighted the button to press after filling in all the data and uploading the source text.

In picture 3, there is the project we have already created and all the information about it. If we want to start translating we should press the "Translate" button, which I have marked with a red circle. However, if we would like to know more details about the translation, there is a "Show details" option underneath. If you click on it, you will see more information (picture 4).

In picture 5 we see what appears to us after pressing the "Translate" option. The text has been segmented by the programme and automatically translated by MT. The programme in the "Translation Matches" tab (photo 6) offers us other options for translation by MT.

In picture 7 I have shown where the option to add vocabulary to the glossary is located. In the first column you enter a word from the source text, in the second column the translation of the word. Unfortunately, there is no option to add definitions to the terms in the glossary. Once a word has been added to the glossary, a yellow box should appear with the words "A glossary item has been added", I have shown this in picture 8.

As per the previous post, I have learned how to add a TM in MateCat. A TM can be uploaded when creating a project. Then it is important to select the option to upload the TM depending on whether you want to publish it for other MateCat users or whether it is a confidential, private TM. As you can see in picture number 1 there is an option that if you select it, when you create the project and enter it, the segments will be automatically translated via TM (if a TM is uploaded).

In picture number 2 I have highlighted some interesting functions in MateCat. These functions are easily accessible, which is a great plus. You won't have to search through tabs to find where a particular option is located. The first one highlighted in yellow is the option to download the following files:

Draft

Original

Export XLIFF

Export Job TMX.

The option next to it highlighted in red is QR (Quality Report). This is a very useful feature, especially for group projects. When you click on this option, a report opens in the second browser window, from which you can find out what the SL and TL are, what percentage of the text has been translated, how many words have been revised, the translator's details (basic data), the amount of translation time taken and the PEE (post-editing effort) , i.e. the average percentage of word changes applied by the translators on suggestions provided by CAT. In the table below entitled "Issues", points are awarded to each category (major - weight 2.0, minor - weight 0.5, neutral - weight 0). The programme distinguishes the following scoring categories:

Style (readability, consistent style and tone)

Tag issues (mismatches, whitespaces)

Translation errors (mistranslation, additions or omissions)

Terminology and translation consistency

Language quality (grammar, punctuation, spelling).

All segments are described in turn below, the description includes: the source sentence and the sentence already translated and the programme can see whether the sentence was translated by TM or without using TM, the number of words, the status of the segment and the QA.

QA (Quality Assurance), which is highlighted in green at the top, is a text validation check, lost tags, etc. Highlighted in purple is a magnifying glass for word searches and a "cloud" through which we can add a comment to a segment.

The red arrow shows the function, which is called "Filter segments" and what is in it is shown in image number 3. The programme allows you to set a given status for a segment, which makes your work much easier. There are many other options in the filters, such as the Fuzzy Match setting, which is responsible for the amount of text it will include in the segments with TM.

Photo 4 shows the options available in the three-dot button. There, it is possible to use the revise function, the overall analysis, the file conversion function and the helpful keyboard shortcut view.

I learned how to convert an .csv file:
1. I open the .csv file and familiarise myself with its contents (it is important to know how many columns there are in the file, what character they are separated by and in what language). In the case of the file I will be converting, it will be 6 columns separated by commas. We also check if there are only Polish characters in the text, if not we will have to use Notepad ++. This was the situation with my file.
2. I close the .csv file and open Notepad++, press open -> search for .csv file -> encoding -> encode in UTF-8-BOM -> save -> close program.
3.

Redokun is a paid online programme with a possible 14-day free version to try out.

Adding a TM is shown in photo number 2, we start by entering the "Translation Memory" tab and then I press the green "Upload TM" button. Then, as in picture number 3, we upload our TM and press "Upload". The programme then asks for SL and TL and counts the content of our TM (photo 4). Photo 5 shows what a correctly uploaded TM looks like. Also visible is the "TM Manager" option, which is used in this programme during text translation in case, for example, we want to check how we translated a word before. TM Manager is a function similar to TB in other programmes, when you search for a word, TB shows you other possibilities for translating the word. This is also the function of TM Manager. In the Redokun programme, unfortunately, there is no possibility to create a TB or a glossary, I consider this to be a big minus for this programme.

I will show what functions of the Redokun programme I have learned. In the photo, number 1 marked in yellow is the confirmation of the document, when it is already translated and ready to be sent back we confirm it right here. The blue frame is marked the bin, which is used to delete the project. The orange frame indicates the option to generate a file, but first all segments must be confirmed. The red arrow shows the settings for the file, while the pink arrow shows the option to upload a different version of the file, which means that if you upload the wrong file when creating the project, the programme allows you to upload a new file without having to create the whole project from scratch. I consider this to be a big plus for this programme. "The lightning bolt" marked in green is the "Pre-translate" option. And the option marked next to it with a black circle is the download of the document. On the left side is the blue "Document List" and this is a list of all the projects we have created. A very interesting feature are the arrows, which I have highlighted in green and red. They enable offline translation. When you click on the green arrow marked "Export phrases", the programme asks in which format you want to export the file (image number 6) and whether you want to skip the translated segments or have them in the exported file. On image number 7 you can see in which formats we can download the file, for example I downloaded the Microsoft Excel file, which is shown on image number 8. When we want to go online again to translate, we go back to the "Document List", enter our project and click on the "Import Phrases" arrow, which I have marked with a red frame on image number 1. The program asks us to upload a file, so we upload the one we previously downloaded and translated offline. This is shown in photo 9. The programme shows us the whole file, and the sentences highlighted in green are those that were added after the file was exported. This is a very useful feature, everything is very clear. Underneath, I press "Confirm" and my file is again ready for online translation. You can see that at each step the programme suggests what the next step will be which makes the programme very easy to use. I think this is a great programme for group work. One last feature I have learned is that when creating a project, if you want it to be translated into more than one language you immediately select all the languages you want it to be translated into and the programme immediately creates the right number of projects, you don't have to create them separately for each language.

A very useful video for operating the Redokun programme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahTFx0uqQ6E
