Spradley
Publication: January 1, 1985
Genre: Biography
Approximate Age Level: 8-12
Teaser: A mom was pregnant with her second child, a little girl. She was exposed to Rubella which caused the baby to be born Deaf. This book shows how the family tries to help their daughter learn to speak and be able to live a "typical" life, even with hearing loss.
Teaching Idea: I would have the students partner up. One student has headphones in and one does not. The "hearing" kid has to say a phrase and the kid with headphones on has to repeat it or try to. Then reverse roles.

She is Deaf and when she comes to visit she can't talk to anyone so she looks sad. The main character surprises her cousin to make her feel happy to be around their family!
Teaching Idea Chapter 8: I would have my class identify a conflict that has happened in either our classroom or a different classroom they were in the year before. I would ask them how they dealt with that conflict. I would then have each child do the same except on a piece of paper. Our class would then make a book about those different conflicts and how they were resolved.
