The Common starfish is not very large and it uses suction to stay plated to the rocks. The suction cups on its limbs can also be used to open clams and oysters. Since the starfish are very exposed especially to humans they are able to grow back their limbs because most of the vital organs are held in the arms. This may not protect them from harm but it helps them with surviving harm.
