I believe that, at the moment, my musical identity consists of very few genres and little music. It does not contain nearly as much music as I would like for it to have though it definitely has grown over the years as I have also grown as a person. I would describe my musical identity to mostly be of pop, banda, latin pop, and R&B music. Although I listen to many other genres and types of music I associate my identity to be closer to these because of how they more describe who I am and how they've influenced me. Two of the genres that I mentioned as apart of my musical identity were Spanish genres which I mostly associate with my family. Turnio mentioned that individual families are an example of nested cultural formations and that interest-based cohorts can exist within one as they "develop special words or things, ways of operating together, jokes, memories, and narratives about the family" (Turnio, 116). Within my family I share musical interests with both of my parents who have strongly influenced what I listen to. These specific genres tie back to memories of my parents introducing me and teaching me about them. Turnio said, "Age is another prominent basis for the formation of cultural cohorts" (Turnio, 112) and I feel like the other genres I mentioned are mostly related to my generations music although I believe that pop is not the most dominant genre among my generation today, it is definitely a major one. These parts of my musical identity relate to my sense of self because they help, like Turnio says, "determine the tendencies for everything we think, feel, experience, and do" (Turnio, 101). They have shaped how I interact with the rest of the world from the languages i speak to way i act.

Menudo

Menudo was a Latin pop band formed in the 1970's and they released their first album in 1977. At that point in time my dad was about 7 or 8 years old so Menudo became his first major musical influence. Sometimes he still plays their music and ends up on different bands or artists who were similar to them then or are similar to them now. Menudo was apart of dozens of artists who sang some of the songs that shaped both of my parents into who they were as adolescents and decided to play them for their children. The only reason that I do have a connection to these songs and can be in the same "interest-based cohort" is because my parents taught me this music and played it for me without a second thought. These songs then branch off into Latin pop music today that I listen to on my own.

One Direction

If I compared myself to my father, then One Direction would be my Menudo. They were formed in 2010 but I didn't know of them until 2012. They were pretty much my entrance in a bunch of different kinds of music genres even though they were a pop boyband. Just as I said before, I think I went along with many other teen/pre-teens of my generation when getting involved with One Direction. The fandom consisted mostly of teenage girls and I decided it was somewhere I belonged and could relate to others to. I became apart of a fandom or a musical cohort and it led me to many other genres but I was always apart of this group of people who all found a place where we could talk about our favorite band. Even once One Direction began their break people split off into following one member in particular. Meaning that other musical cohorts were created and now have their own things to talk about separate from One Direction but still connected.

Banda MS is a band that my parents actual did not listen to very much. They were someone that I found since they were related to music that my parents had listened to. Again, they pretty much led me to this and it has ended up being music that I very much appreciate and like. I can relate their music to my extended family as it sounds like something they would listen to and it connects me to memories of them. Bands like this have highly influenced who I listen to on a daily basis and this band is one of them.
Video Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmlJHCzvs_Y

Niall Horan is a member of One Direction and is my favorite member which is why I went to go see him live. As I said before, I was among people who shared the same interest as me and many of them were around my age or also female. There were plenty of people who did not fit that exact definition but overall these were the people I was around for hours and hours. I enjoyed his music so much that I actually went to see him live which is a much bigger dedication than just listening to someone on the phone (though that can also show dedication). I identify with his music and find myself telling people sometimes that I do listen to Niall Horan and that I do find his music relatable to me and my life.
Video Source: Myself
