Sam Harris uses evidence that physiologist Benjamin Libet used EEG to show that activity in the brain's motor cortex can be detected before a person feels that he has decided to move. This support is most convincing because your brain knows what you're thinking before you do. His least convincing argument is that criminals should not be punished.

Sam Harris illustrates the illusion of free will by explaining how the brain knows what action we will perform before we have processed it. The most convincing piece of evidence was "two regions of the brain had information on what action would be taken a full 7-10 seconds before the decision was consciously made" (Harris 8,9). This was most convincing because it was a physical lab conducted by a scientist.

Both men were abused in their childhood years, and this might have affected their behavior as adults. He explains that "these men cannot not know why they are as they are" because they lack control over their lives.
