Then when you pose questions to the group in a live class, all students answer you privately. We can easily edit their writings online and send it back to them. However, I do think it adds a personal touch, especially during this time of limited personal contact, to make handwritten notes and send them back to students. I will have students email or share via Google Docs their writing pieces such as practice GED responses. I will then print them out and make edits on them by hand. I use the app, CamScanner- PDF Scanner App, pictured below, on my iphone (free of charge) to scan their edited papers and send them back to the students. Even if they have to ask me what my handwriting says, again, it is nice to have that personal touch.

I did have school email addresses and some personal email addresses for them, but some of them were not frequently used. I decided to create a Google Voice account. It is free of charge and the app icon is pictured below. This allows me to text the students directly on a device that I know they will see, and I have had little to no issues with wrong numbers like I used to with home phone numbers.  I like using Google Voice instead of my regular cell phone number, because I can easily group students by class by adding a label when I enter them into my contacts. Also, I only use Google Voice for my students so I know when I get a text through that account, it is one of my students and I should not save it for later. Sometimes a text on my regular cell number will get buried in group texts about carpooling and family get-togethers:)  Some prefer that students not have their cell phone numbers, so this is a bonus too. Lastly, Google Voice can easily be opened on my computer, so many days, I will just leave that tab open, and I can quickly text students as I go through their work. Overall, it has been a huge help, and I think I will continue to use it no matter the modality of the course.
