Today, if I am here in front of you, it is only in oder to convince you to commemorate every year this date in Britain, which is the Windrush Day. « Because our heroes must not be forgetten ». 

Thus, let me tell you why I decided to lauch a campaign to commemorate this very important day…

Firstly, after the Second World War, whereas now, we had nothing. The cities were totally destroyed, there was not enough workers and the Jamaicans arrived during this period. In this way, they rebuilt our wonderful city London. They were poor people who came here with a ship which carying 500 Caribbean who went to the capital. Due to the fact that was the first wave of mass migration from Caribbean Island. They only wanted to have better quality of life and education. However they did not offer themselves this quality of life to them, but to us, the English people. This is actually a heroic act.

Secondly, they saved us from chaos but they had to faced racism at the same time. For example, many of them were harassed such as black people on account of the owners of some hotels who said « no Irish, no blacks, no dogs. » Furthemore, there was a few of English children who had never ever seen a black person in places like in the Midlands. Therefore, that was really hurtful for the Jamaicains who felt discriminated against and being homesick.

Thirdly, they bring the diversity. As I said before, a lot of people had never seen a black person. Also they brought us diversity with their origins, skin color, culture and more. In addition to this, most of them were graduates and have brought back their intellectual mind. 

They work for us, they suffered for us, they made a long journey for us. This is the main reason why we have a duty to commemorate this historic date. Thank you.

In my opinion, the Windrush Day is very important in the history of Great Britain because it was a change for many of Jamaican's life. They came to England in order to find a job, to have a better education and also because they wished to have a better life. They helped to rebuilt London after the Second World War. But unfortunately, they weren't really rewarded. Indeed, they faced a lot of racism and discrimination whereas now, they are part of England and they are accepted. Jamaicans deserve to have this commemoration after all they have been through. They bring so much more than workforce. Jamaicans enriched British culture. 

I think that a celebration could show how much this day is important for Great Britain and this could be a way to make a tribute for Jamaicans, who suffered so much in the past. Finally, this could build stronger bridges between black people and white people.

First, do not forget the 492 passengers who were aboard the Empire Windrush on the 22^nd of June 1948. Indeed, they helped British people to rebuild their country after the Second World War. Without them, nothing would be like it is today. Some of them were barely coming back from the front. In my opinion, it's essential to remember what they did for England. Moreover, most of the time they were poor and they had the courage and kindness to come to England while they were surely not in a position to rebuilt a whole country because of the Second World War. But they did it anyway. They always dreamt about a good education and better quality of life and they gave their lives to the British people. So for me, they are the real heroes of the British community. 

Then, they had to face racism. English people were not grateful to them. They were not accepted in the hotels because they were black. Sometimes, british people made fun of them just because they were not used to seeing a black person. It was very hurtful for the Jamaïcan people because they had travelled for a long time they were confused and exhausted.

They showed an unbelievable courage. We can't act as if nothing had happened. They suffered a lot for the british people to have a beautiful way of life. And therefore we can't forget the good things they accomplished and we will always remember this.

It is important to commemorate the Windrush for Jamaicans who feel excluded from the English community due to racism. It would be a great step forward to celebrate a day to fight racism and be part of England like any English. It is our duty to pay them a tribute because of the economic recovery that was given to England after the Second World War.

Finally, celebrating a day for Windrush could highlight the importance of integrating Jamaicans into England, despite the ubiquitous racism we all know in our society. 

I want to make Windrush a memorial day to improve human relations because we always need it.

We British folks were in a difficult situation at the time : our country was wounded and needed to recover from the war. Jamaicans kindly offered their strenght in order to help us rebuild our well loved country. That is why we should be thankful. That is why I wish to celebrate this day, and celebrate those people who gave us so much.

I would also like to commemorate this day in order not only to express my deepest recognition, but also to make up for what Jamaican people endured. They came in the aim of helping our country, yet most of them were victims of racism and discrimination. Therefore I want to thank them today, because we couldn't thank them properly then.
