His work usually consists of paintings and drawings with muted colours showcasing his storybook-like creatures.

Analysis

“Magnolia”

This work was sketched, most likely with coloured pencils or worked digitally. The colours are mainly warm hues with muted and less saturated cool colours like green, representing the leaves and two small creatures to add contrast and definition to certain parts of the piece. I believe the colours work nicely together as yellow and green (the main colours used in the sketch) as they are harmonious colours which make the artwork pleasing to look at. He has used a variety of lines in his work, sketching thinner lines to create the direction of the leaves as well as their texture. Thicker lines and more freehanded lines have been used to create the petals that give them a free form and natural appearance effectively as well as boldness compared to the leaves. Sanchez uses gentle shapes not only for the flower, but for the creatures within it which adds to the light hearted fantasy mood thats built within the artwork. In my opinion, Sanchez has used the formal elements effectively to create a dream-like piece.

Analysis

In his works, his characters seem to stand out by using more saturated chalks, or, by using colours or tones that stand out from the surface he is using. To create the illusion of the artwork popping out, he makes sure to keep in mind perspective in mind and where shadows would be casted as if it was a 3D piece.

His work has inspired my project as i wanted to include my character in real life photos by illustrating over them. I also wanted to make sure my character would stick out from their surroundings as well as the nature that spirals.

I then played around with different "hats" like a lily pad and a mushroom before i thought about making antennae based off the plant "Corkscrew Albuca" because of their spiralling nature. (which would also incorporate spirals and another aspect of nature.) Lastly, i wanted to create some form of "clothing" for my character. Immediately, i thought about tree bark and how in nature, some trees bend, twist and spiral which was the inspiration for their "clothing".

In her collection "the circle" there is a string of photos that tell a story and by the end, repeats the cycle. I like how the being guiding her seems like a ghost or spirit/wisp as it appears bright with with numerous orbs that surround them. Some of the orbs have a small traces of colour as well as others appearing brighter than the others. This gives the creature a more ethereal look as well as them being luminous. They also have no facial features and are made up of bold white lines that look continuous, maybe a reference to their spirit like selves as creatures in mythology tend to be immortal. Another thing i like about this art collection is that the young woman and man are wearing vivid red clothing whilst the rest of the surrounding nature is green. Red and green are complementary colours which makes the woman and man appear brighter and stand out from the surroundings, just like the beings that also stand out in her art but for the reasons I mentioned previously. In my opinion, i think this collection is a beautiful story that could hint to cycles ( as the story loops back to the beginning) or how everything inevitably becomes nature in the end.

I wanted to use Razell's techniques to create a short story, whether that be in book form or a small series of illustrations just like this collection.

Analysis

In this land art, he has used foraged leaves of yellow to dark red to create a clear gradient that orbits around the black circle in the middle. The leaves stand out from the negative space as the hues of the leaves are vibrant. The size of the leaves are near the same shape and size which creates consistency in the artwork. The black centre is a near perfect circle which is impressive as the leaves have been layered in a perfect way to give that illusion. In my opinion, this artwork is a great way to commemorate nature as Goldsworthy has used leaves from his surroundings to create an interesting an unique piece.

I wanted to make my own man made spiral using leaves that i found in my surrounding area as i was exploring the spirals in nature as well as artists like Andy Goldsworthy that use nature to create their own spirals and whirling art. The relationship between man and nature was something i thought about adding subtly in my project as i find it interesting how artists like this repurpose nature to create art.

For all the planning for each illustration, i used Ibis Paint X as i didnt have access to Adobe Illustrator
