Bosnia and Herzegovina is preparing for its
first post-war census since 1991. The census is the most important data source
for human geographers, and the first census in 22 years allows the world to see
the impact the war has had on the country’s population. The information from the census ties in with
the country’s population pyramid; will it have a graying population, a middle
aged population, or a young population? This information will help determine
what problems the country might face and how to prevent them.

Population pyramid

A- Stage 3

B- The shape of the pyramid leads me to
believe the country is a part of stage 3 in the demographic transition model,
which is moderate growth. In this stage, CBR is declining faster than CDR. The
top of the pyramid is narrower than the rest of the model, meaning there are
not as many older citizens as there are middle age or young people. However, it
seems to be increasing, and as the middle age people age, the elderly
population will be greater than the young population. The bottom of the pyramid
is narrow as well, which indicates that people are having fewer children. This
is can be due to development in the country such as more people choosing an
urban lifestyle, or more women working and not being able to take care of too
many children.

C- Problems Bosnia and Herzegovina might face
are problems associated with a graying population, such as not enough people in
the workforce, no way to take care of the old people, and the government not
having enough money to give financial aid to the elderly.
