I feel they caused a lot of harm like the trade routes spread disease, and everyone started trying to claim land that wasn't theirs. Which caused unnecessary conflict between many other countries like with Africa and the Muslim kingdoms. Cortez surprised the party on shore and killed the party leader , and took the remaining soldiers back to Cuba. The Spanish army looted, stole, and killed the Aztecs meanwhile diseases like smallpox were killing people by the thousands. Montezuma abandoned the city due to his ineffectiveness. No he did not. The first sign was him defying Spanish orders. I think the plan was to go to other countries and attack their natives even though that is not his land or territory. He didn't even get orders from his government to do that so of course he wasn't looking for knowledge. He just wanted to conquer somewhere and get fame and glory. I also feel that if it was a discovery they would have became friends and learned about each other and the land, and not just claiming it and pushing people of their own property. They also wouldn't have just tried to convert them to Christianity with out their permission. they could've taught them about it but they didn't have to force being Christian on them.
