The U.S wanted farm land to farm sugar and a naval base (Pearl Harbor) to strengthen their military presence. We got control of it by promising to protect them, but also threatened them with military force if they didn't comply and join with the U.S. Hawaii was being pressured by several countries, and that's why the U.S promised protection.

Sugar Planters staged and uprising to overthrow Queen Liliuokalani and maintain control of the island. Marines stormed the islands without presidential approval, supposedly to protect american lives. However Grover Cleveland was an anti-imperialist and told the withdrew the sugar planters annexation(bill to make Hawaii a state). He felt that it was wrong to shove the native people off of their island. After realizing the importance of Hawaii as a naval base after the war with Spain in 1898. President William McKinley then annexed the state into a territory at the end of the war. The territory then became a state in 1959 -C.J.
