In the acute care setting, patients with nurses that were assigned based on ratios experienced longer lengths of stay on average.
PATIENT COMPLICATIONS: The paper concluded that staffing models that included CNAs to assist RNs resulted in decreased patient complications. By increasing the percentage of CNAs on a unit, the hospital also experience decreased staffing costs. This increased percentage of unlicensed assistive personnel allowed for more contact time with patients and decreased in unit complications.
NURSE JOB SATISFACTION: It was found that both nurses and CNAs had a decrease in job satisfaction when faced with staffing models that focused on ratios instead of acuity.
