The witch trials started because of Betty Parris, 9, and Abigail Williams, 11. They both asked a slave named Tituba for their fortunes. The months after, they started to act strangely. They hid in holes and under chairs. The girls accused Tituba and 2 other women as witches who were causing their behavior. This started the Salem witch trials.

One huge factor that caused the hysteria was fear. For example, there were many Indian raids in the area at this time. This may have caused fear among the people. In addition, fear was also used as a defense mechanism. This is because once one person was accused of being a witch, everyone started accusing each other in order to save themselves from being accused and hanged. Furthermore, fear was triggered by their beliefs. This was because they believed that the Devil was real and that he controlled witches. Because of this, people became afraid because they believed that the Devil was clever which caused them to become scared of what witches could do. As a result, all of this fear created the Salem Witch Trial hysteria.

20 people were hanged on September 19, 1692 as a result of the Salem Witch Trial hysteria. During the year of 1692 in Salem many people were accused of practicing witch craft and/or being witches. The accusers were afraid of the harm these "witches" would bring. Therefore they began accusing anyone and everyone they had even a slight thought that they could possibly be a witch. Many of the accusers were poor and lived on the west side of town. The poor people wanted more power and by accusing people of witchery, they got it. Some of the accused witches were young girls. In a theory that Charles Upham had he thought that the afflicted girls were acting. He believed the girls were acting to be taken over by the "witches" for the fame. Since they had tremendous success they continued. The people of Salem would have never suspected children to pretend to be a witch like they did. The witch trials slowly came to a close with the help of the governor's wife was accused. The Salem Witch Trial hysteria was a significant time in history that opened many peoples eyes to fear, fame, and power.
