Ignorance Keeps the Need for War Strong

In 1984 it is reviled that "the fact that there IS no danger of conquest makes possible the denial of reality which is the
special feature of Ingsoc and its rival systems of thought" but the people are being led to believe that there is that sense of danger. The people believe that there is a danger that Oceania will be defeated if they don't remain good citizens and the truth that there isn't actually all that much danger shows how keeping the citizens ignorant of the truth of the matter is keeping the nation's military strong. The government lies to the citizens to ensure the outcome is what they want it to be by claiming that there is a danger that isn't really there and won't affect the citizens in the way that they are being manipulated into believing.

In order to maintain the people of Oceania following the strictly imposed rules, they have been forced to act as though they know nothing. They know that "those who have the best knowledge of what is happening are also those who are furthest from seeing the world as it is. In general, the greater the understanding, the greater the delusion; the more intelligent, the less sane." The lives of the people of Oceania have become distorted to the extent that if they are to find any new information, they are to keep it to themselves for their own survival. If their society or government were to find out that the knowledge of the people is more extensive than it is accepted to be, they are captured and dealt with which prevents them from ever reaching the point of society that they wish to be a part of. Even the people have become accustomed to this way of living ti the extent that they themselves call those who have a deeper understanding delusional. This is also the same with intelligence. The people are forbidden from knowing anything besides what the government lets them know. Those who do know more than they are allowed to, are outcasted and alienated by the society.

No More Middle, No More Problems

In 1984, it was revealed that "The Middle, so long as it was struggling for power, had always made use of such terms as freedom, justice, and fraternity" and the Party has taken away the Middle Class. The Middle Class would have made it harder for the Party to keep the people in check because when there is hope that one will rise through the social classes, there is hope for change. If the Party only has two classes with one being harder to move out from, the class that is considered the lower class are called proles and are looked down upon by society but are tricked by the Party that they have it better than they did before the Party took over. Without the Middle Class, there is no need to have fear of revolt because the Middle is no longer there to get the proles to get on their side to overthrow the government. Without the Middle, there is no need to even attempt to elevate the lower class and convince them that things will get better for them when in fact it will only be the Party who benefits from the loss of the Middle. The Party paints the idea of the Middle as something evil and therefore, it is viewed as something to be feared by the proles because nothing will get better for them and it will only get worse for them in the end. The Party convinces the proles that they are better off listening to the Party instead of listening to others who just want to harm and overthrow the Party. The ignorance of the people keeps the Party in power and keeps the proles from going against the Party and eventually overthrowing it.

Contradictions in Ignorance

Within this dystopian society, there are many contradicting variables. This is also stated in 1984 when the author writes that "This peculiar linking-together of opposites—knowledge with ignorance...is one of the chief distinguishing marks of Oceanic society. The official ideology abounds with contradictions even when there is no practical reason for them. Thus, the Party rejects and vilifies every principle for which the Socialist movement originally stood, and it chooses to do this in the name of Socialism." Another saying of contradiction is "Ignorance is Strength," yet, somehow, the contradictions follow through with each other. Much like "knowledge is ignorance" and "ignorance is strength," all of the contradictions within the society are in accordance to contradictions which are seemingly there for no reason. The actual way that they are used is in a form of propaganda for the people to believe these words and live by them or face torture, death, or alienation. The government still excuses this behavior by labeling the society as a Socialist society in which it is believed that everything done for the government is for the benefit of the people. In accordance to their lives, this became a reality because the only thing protecting them from further damage was the government with the military, yet, the government that was meant to protect them, was also murdering its own people and consequently, the morals that are "normal" became completely immoral in the way that everything links back to the ignorance that the people are forcefully put under and must keep silence about.

Ignorance changed Everything and Nothing

In 1984, the society that is written about by George Orwell also includes its own levels of class. In this case, "As soon as they have reached their objective, the Middle thrust the Low back into their old position of servitude, and themselves become the High...Of the three groups, only the Low are never even temporarily successful in achieving their aims." The middle class in this society is described as pushing those below them lower after having "reached their objective" in order to maintain power and climb their way to the higher class and in the process of pressuring those in the lower class to become lower, they shove them back into their previous position of "servitude." This stops the abundant lower class from climbing up in the social latter because as the problem continues and nothing is being done, everything in this dystopian society continued changing but only to where it benefited those with the most privileges. Those with little to none of privileges, were only swallowed more into the dystopian society where they were even unable to bring up these kind of issues to the government. In the process of this, the theme of "ignorance is strength" is enforced when no one speaks a word about these issues in the classes that happen so often that the government nor the people try to change what has become normal for them. Still, it is beneficial to the government to keep more people depending on them which in this case would be the lower class.

As the dystopian society that Winston is a part of continues to develop, everything that they do is done according to the Party. The citizens had no freedom, "All the beliefs, habits, tastes, emotions, mental attitudes that characterize our time are really designed to sustain the mystique of the Party and prevent the true nature of present-day society from being perceived..." everyone ignored all of the abnormalities about their society. What they came to believe, was to accept that the present that they were living in, was completely normal. Restrictions prohibited citizens from thinking otherwise. Still, it was noticeable to them that this was part of the reason that they were still under the governments control. Their reality was a form of confinement that did not allow any form of defiance. The ignorance of these people towards the cruelty of the government became their strength and they adapted to learn that any form of opposition or noncompliance could bring them deadly consquences.

Ignorance is what has maintained the people of Oceania alive. Yet there are a few people who are defiant and question the society that they living in. In this scenario, Winston questions, "WHY should human equality be averted?" Before asking this to himself, he mentions that there was a question that"until this moment we have almost ignored." Winston reverts to the question of "WHY" in his inexplicable moment of disbelief. Through this it is quite evident that the society that Winston is a part of has become completely blinded and subjected under the government to the point that it takes much knowledge to be able to discover basic information such as the ability of having freedom without having to worry about the government taking the life of a civilian. However, once the government discovers that its citizens have been exposed to this knowledge, they are put under severe torture and aren't returned back into their society.
