         <description><![CDATA[<p>An abrasion wound is a wound that occurs only on the surface of the epidermis. These types of wounds do not ensue life threatening bleeding or scarring. </p><p><br/></p><p>Treatment for an abrasion would includes cleaning the would with a sterile gauze and using an antiseptic like a cream.</p><p><br/></p><p>Post treatment for an abrasion would is to keep the would and the surrounding area dry by using a bandaid or other thin covering.</p>]]></description>

Laceration wounds are commonly infected by bacteria and/ or foreign objects.</p><p><br/></p><p>Initial care for a laceration wound includes cleaning the wound with cold water or a sterile gauze. </p><p><br/></p><p>Post treatment includes keeping the area clean with an antibiotic to ensure that the wound is not infected, and to apply a bandage or gauze to help the wound heal. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>A puncture wound is a deep wound that is created by a sharp object such as a nail. Puncture wounds may look superficial, but often puncture the layer below the skin. Stitches are commonly used on puncture wounds.</p><p><br/></p><p>Treatment for a puncture would be to leave the object in the place it was found (in the arm, leg, etc.). A professional will remove the object safely so no further damage is done. </p><p><br/></p><p>Post treatment includes washing the wound softly with water to ensure that the healing process is not slowed. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>An avulsion wound is a wound that occurs when the skin from the body is forcibly torn off. This can sometimes lead to bones or ligaments being exposed. </p><p><br/></p><p>Treatment for avulsion wounds include attempting to reattach the skin to the body or a skin graft. </p><p><br/></p><p>Resting the body and icing the area to reduce swelling after the wound has been treated are common post treatment practices when dealing with an avulsion. </p>]]></description>

         <title>Essential Questions</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li><p>Universal precaution, as stated by OSHA, is to treat any wound as if the blood contains infectious pathogens. When caring for a wound, it is very important that the hands are washed before and after cleaning the wound. In addition to clean hands, gloves are to be used and replaced after moving to another person. Barrier protection, such as aprons, goggles, masks, etc., are all extremely important in caring for a wound responsibly. </p></li><li><p>To remove a pair of gloves properly, take the first glove off regularly (making sure it is inside out), and with your bare hand, slip two fingers underneath the glove at the top of your wrist and take the glove off without touching the surface of it. Make sure to pull the glove away from your body.</p></li><li><p>An increase of swelling, reddening of the area around the wound, presence of pus, and larger scabbing are all indicative of an infected wound. </p><p><br/></p></li></ol>]]></description>
