I grew up relatively poor. My parents came from Mexico and they were limited in their opportunities. It was bad in that we struggled to obtain clothes, food, running hot water, etc., but I also have great memories and generally had the basics.

At my school we have no teachers that are African-American this year which means that for our many African-American students they do not have a teacher who looks like them.

Limitations on mobility are often perceived as laziness. When I was non-weightbearing on one leg and had a handicap permit and a Dr. note my university tried to not give me a disabled permit to use on the university grounds.

Different expectations to teaching styles, such as being more nurturing or "soft" towards students because of being a female teacher. Teacher males are expected to be more strict or less empathetic towards students.

I grew up in a very privileged town in the East Bay. But my parents were very blue collar and we lived pay check to pay check. It made me work hard and get a job when I was 15. I saved money and went to college and graduated with little debt. I feel lucky and I am proud of myself.

For students whose parents either don't speak English or English is a second language, it is hard to help support their students educational needs at home. In a parent conference I had, a parent broke down because she couldn't help her daughter learn to read because she couldn't read English herself =(.

I have been physically disabled several times over the course of my life due to knee injuries since I was 12. I've had 2 surgeries on my knees and becoming disabled was horrible. I still own and use ice packs, knee braces, crutches, and a cane whenever my knees are acting up. As I've been aging, wow, the pain is immobilizing.
