After the good housewife was published Australia's view on women has changed significantly. We have changed the thought that women were powerless and must stay in the house, cook, clean and take care of the children. The women were considered to be caretakers for the men. Our view on this has changed. Women can work and provide the money with family and the men can cook and clean. Now in marriages, it should be fair meaning each person should do equal work and both need to take care of the kids.

Select ONE quote from Tony Abott. Explain why Gillard considered it sexist?

As she continues the speech and the arguments points get more heated, this is depicted in how she raises her voice to emphasise her point.

She also has the use of repetition, for example repeating the phrase, I will not. Thaitreally shows her opinion and belief in a strong way.

She also uses an expression when saying she took offence to some of the phrases. Thai really shows that she is saying this strongly and it is her true belief. This gets people to think and process that she is not misogynistic or sexist.

3. What was the speech about?

The greatest speech in Australian history showed empowerment and strength by Julia Gillard. The speech was about how she would not be lectured about sexism and misogyny. The leader of the opposition team stated that if he held sexist views she would not be cut out or appropriate for the high office. Which in others is questioning her role as the prime minister! But Julia Gillard kept her head high and switched the tables and accused him of being a misogynist. She had multiple pieces of evidence for example: "What the housewives of Australia need to understand as they do the ironing…” Thank you for that painting of women's roles in modern Australia.

2. Why did Tony Abbott accuse Julia Gillard of sexism?

The press discovered that Peter slipper (the speaker for the liberal party) , the representative speaker for Julia Gillard, had sent misogynistic text messages outside of work. This, therefore, led to theories by the leader of the opposition, Tony Abbot to accuse Julia Gillard to have the same views as Peter slipper, therefore leading to accusations of her being a misogynist, and sexist although she was a woman herself!

What does the word misogyny mean?

Misogyny is the hatred and bias against women's rights. This is hatred towards women, for no valid reason.

4. Select ONE quote from Tony Abott. Explain why Gillard considered it sexist?

“What the housewives of Australia need to understand as they do the ironing…” Thank you for that painting of women's roles in modern Australia”. Guillard considered this as sexist as it provokes a thought saying that all women do is adhere to their role as housewives, and all they do is iron. The phrase is very offensive as it didn't state anything about men doing any housework.

Julia Gillard was called to make the memorable “misogyny speech” because her opposing party was accusing her of being a hypocrite on sexist views. Her speaker, known as Mr Slipper, spread his views to other people. After the liberal party found out, they accused her of supporting Mr Slipper's views. Julia Gillard later came out with a speech describing the opposition leader's views towards women and her calling him out for accusing her of being a hypocrite while Tony Abbott is the real hypocrite.

Since the good house wives have came out everyones perspective has changed. Girls have became more aware they have stood up for themself they are now not afraid to let there opinion get out there. We have changed the thought of we should be powerless and our opinions dont matter, we knew that wasent true but our words were degraded by the mens perspective. We have changed how we had to stay home and cook , clean and take care of the house plus make sure we look good when the husbands get home. We have became more aware that men can also be a parent not just a money maker, We now know our feelings do matter and us being perfect all the time is non existent. We know that the husbands and females have to be equal and work together for us to have a good relationship and bring out kids up right. Thats how Australia has changed.

Gender equality is the fight for women to be seen and treated as equal to men. In the 1950s, women were housewives and never had jobs. An article in the newspaper was published called the Good Wife Guide. It was basically telling women to treat their husbands like kings. When WWII started all the men were shipped out into battle leaving their wives at home. Without the men to provide for their families, all the women had to get jobs in factories this prompted a poster to be published. The poster consisted of a woman pulling up her sleeve with words around the poster saying “We Can Do It” After the men returned from WWII, the women went back to being housewives and taking care of their husbands, however, due to the men having trauma and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) divorce rates started rising as the husbands believed their wives could never understand what they went through. With no homes, no families and no source of income, women were protesting so they could get jobs and support themselves. This started a huge wave of feminism and started the gender wars. In later years, women would be given the right to work, vote and even run for Prime Minister. Australia still isn’t perfect though. The first female Prime Minister, named Julia Eileen Gillard, was accused of being a misogynist when her speaker, Peter Slipper, was revealed to be a misogynist due to the texts that he sent. She was accused by the Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abott. Julia Gillard then gave the greatest speech in Australian history and called out Abott for his own misogynistic beliefs. While Australia isn’t exactly perfect when it comes to equality, we have improved tons from what it was like in the 50s and 60s. In fact, from 2010 to 2013, Australia had its first female Prime Minister named Julia Eileen Gillard. This proves that we have achieved some form of gender equality, however, we can still improve.

Australia has been striving for gender equality for the past century, and it's likely we are not far from achieving it. Before I talk about gender equality, what is it? Gender equality is a phrase that determines if men and women have equal rights. Gender equality has a strong tie to politics. With all that behind me, Australia is not far from achieving gender equality. In the 1950s, gender equality was barely a thing. Women needed to stay home and cook and take care of their husband. Women could not hold jobs, buy property or sign any contracts, making gender equality scarce among the 1950s. Then the 1960s came, and this was the first wave of feminism. The iconic “we can do it” poster was created. Women started to divorce their husbands which made the divorce rate high. Let's fast forward to modern day australia. In 2011, julia gillard was prime minister and she had a deputy speaker, known as Mr Slipper. Mr slipper spread his personal sexist views to some people and the opposing team found out. Tony abbot (leader of opposition) called Julia Gillard sexist and a hypocrite for supporting Mr Slipper. Julia Gillard later came out with a speech, exposing Tony Abbot for things he said about women, and about Julia Gillard. After all this, i would say australia is close to achieving gender equality.

Gender equality is when genders enjoy an equal range of rights, obligations, and opportunities, this is known as gender equality. Gender inequality affects everyone, including men, women, transgender and non-binary persons, kids, and families. Equality wasn't a thing in Australia in the 1950s, women didn't have a say, it was always the mens voice that was the only one who had an opinion. Women were expected to cook , clean and take care of their kids while worrying how she looked when her husband came home and the state he was in. Women had to worry about if they were ok if their feelings were not valid only the mens. Women didn't have many opportunities or obligations. Yes, people are still striving. Julia Gillard said ‘if there was a man sitting in this chair he would not be getting eyed up and down and cat called’ There are still girls feeling uncomfortable wherever they go , women are getting sexualiesd with the things where they feel the need to be covered up. Same goes for men, they are expected to be big, tough and strong and not show emotion and are only the money giver, why should they feel the need to be like that? Why is the environment still controlling us and why is Australia still striving for gender equality ? Yes, people are still striving. Julia Gillard said ‘if there was a man sitting in this chair he would not be getting eyed up and down and cat called’ There are still girls feeling uncomfortable wherever they go , women are getting sexualiesd with the things where they feel the need to be covered up. Same goes for men, they are expected to be big, tough and strong and not show emotion and are only the money giver, why should they feel the need to be like that? Why is the environment still controlling us and why is Australia still striving for gender equality ? Australia has come a long way but we are still striving towards being gender equal. Women have different variations of opportunities for them, there are people helping single mothers and groups for men to express their feelings when they are scared. But one thing that Australia hasn't achieved is what they say to each other. Men still say we should go back to the kitchen, how is that helping us strive towards being equal? Why are young men saying that still and why are girls expecting the men to ‘protect’ them. For us to help being equal we should educate the kids more and get them to have a voice and say during this process.

Australia was in no position to how it was in the 1960’s however, it had not achieved gender equality yet. Australia is still striving for gender equality because of the unjust and harsh stereotypes against both men and women. Now women are allowed to work and are less expected to be stay-at-home housewives. But when women are working the standards and expectations are still the same. Even if men and women have the same amount of education and knowledge, men still continue, until this day, to get paid more than women. Women are allowed to wear whatever they want, but still, get comments on how much cleavage is shown or how not feminine the outfit is. Women aren't the only victims of gender equality not being reached, and so are men. Men are still expected to not express their emotions and are meant to be ‘strong’ and ‘protective’. Gender equality is crucial but will never get fully resolved. Due to young people being nurtured into a competitive state, everything will and is a competition. There will always be girls saying ‘girls are better than boys’ and boys saying ‘Boys are stronger than girls’. Unless that issue is resolved, gender equality will never expand, and will be stuck at the extent of gender equality today. Australia has not achieved gender equality, people are still striving for their rights, and their ability to not be overgeneralized by being put into a category because of nothing but their gender! Australia has made progress but is still a long way off.

The first wave of feminism happened in the mid 1800s to 1900 by Western Australian women who wanted the right to vote and have the same rights as men. To this day Gender equality has not been achieved. Yes, It has gotten better. Yes women have more rights than they had before. But no, They are not equal to men. Australia is one of those countries who have not achieved gender equality but has been getting better throughout the centuries. This is shown throughout the good wife's guide and Julia Gilards Misogymy speech, Julia Gilard was the first female prime minister in Australia. This is shown as improvement, but an article from 1955. This article is talking about how a wife should treat her wife and how to be a “good wife”. This article is highly stereotypical and depicts how much women and men aren’t equal. One point of the good wife’s guide is “Listen to him; you may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first. Remember his topic of conversation "Are more important than yours” This point infuriated many females, saying that men are more important than women or that you should listen to him and say what you want to say. The Misogyny speech depicts improvement in Gender equality because it shows Julia Gilard standing up for herself and not letting a man step on her.

The Australian government has a very strong and ongoing commitment to promoting gender equality. Australia has achieved far more than just gender equality such as, ending gender-based violence, advancing women's economic empowerment, enhancing women's leadership and so forth. Australia was the second nation in the world to let women vote back in 1902, but in 1894 women got full rights. The Australian government is one of the most supporting governments when it comes to gender equality, they have tried their hardest to support and promote gender equality. The Misogyny speech by Julia Gillard was one of the most important, inspiring and uplifting speeches in Australia as it talks about the sexist and rude comments that Tony Abbott had said behind her back. The speech sparked flames and the hate towards Tony Abbott began. This speech is what inspired young Australians to want gender equality for all genders.

Women have started to change how they want to live their lives, they have realised that they do not want to stay in the house, cook and clean for their families. As a society we have began to realise that men and women in relationships should both play a role in going to work and taking care of children.
