If they find a place where they can build a farm they could then start looking for animals that appear to be healthy and not affected that much by the radiation, they could then take care of them, study them and reproduce them so that when they are cured they can eat them without being affected by the radiation/mutations that most animals have now. If they could discover a way to filter undrinkable water, they could make it safe for watering plants and drinkable for humans and for the animals in their farm.
