1) "Our eyes met" is an example of personification (Cass 191). Their eyes aren't actually physically meeting or being introduced to each other, they just look into each others eyes.
2) "A chorus of 'Majesty' and 'Highness' fell over him" is also person
3) "was almost as beautiful as Queen Amberly" is a simile (Cass 261). This is a simile because it is comparing the queen and her sister with as. A simile compares two things using like or as.
4) "the bars of the balcony caged me in" is a hyperbole (Cass 111). This is a hyperbole because she is exaggerating her lack of freedom. She could leave if she wanted.
5) "Aspen carried the needs of everyone he loved on his back" is another hyperbole (Cass 22). He isn't actually carrying anything, it just means he has a lot handle.

One symbol in The Selection is the penny in the jar. America mentions the penny when she is packing saying " I started to put the jar on a shelf, but I noticed that little penny again" (Cass 70). The penny in the jar symbolizes America and Aspen's love. Every time America would sing for Aspen he would give her a penny as a small compensation for her performance (Cass 23-24). America thinks of Aspen and their relationship every time she looks at the jar. The penny in the jar is a major symbol in The Selection.
One last symbol that has a big part in the book is the garden. For America, the garden represents her freedom. On page 111, America nearly has a panic attack because she needs to be free outside, and frankly just get some fresh air (Cass). The outdoors is her escape. She feels caged in the palace and the outside is freedom for her. In conclusion, the garden is an important symbol.

I choose this because America has many things/people that very significant to her. All of the items on the list are essentials in her life and make it complete. Without these things it would be hard for America to live happily.

The first image I choose is a picture of a penny inside a jar. This image is almost identical to how the author describes America's penny in a jar. The second image is a picture of a garden. The palace in the novel has a beautiful garden that America likes to go in. The book doesn't describe the looks of the garden much, but this is how I imagine it looks.

I choose this picture because America is really close to her friends a family. This picutre shows a bunch of people together that are friends or family. America couldn't live without her family. America's new friends are very close to her. Overall, this image is a good representation of America's list.
