Interested in machinery since childhood, Howe learned the machinist trade and worked in a cotton machinery factory. During this time it was suggested to him that the man who invented a machine that could sew would earn a fortune. Drake met stockholders of the Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company. Which claimed a lease on land near Titusville,PA where oil had been gathered from ground-level seepages for medicinal uses. Bell began researching methods to transmit telegraph messages simultaneously over a single wire—a major focus of telegraph innovation led to Bell’s invention of the telephone. Despite having the patent, Bell did not have a fully functioning instrument. Facing depressed business conditions in Vermont and with a young family to care for, Deere traveled alone to Grand Detour, Illinois, to make a fresh start. Resourceful and hard working, his skills as a blacksmith were immediately in demand.
