Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand- June 28,1914

Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated while they were on the way to sarajevo on June 28,1914. Gavrilo Princip ran up to the archduke's car and shot him two times assassinating him because he threatened Bosnia's independence. The death of Franz Ferdinand caused Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia. The war with Austria-Hungary and Serbia caused WW1 to start.

Battle of Somme - July 1,1916

The Battle of Somme was one of the costliest battles of WW1 and lasted 5 months. The Battle was started by the British to try and help the French get the Germans off their territory. At the end of the Battle there were 650,000 casualties and 200,000 soldiers lost their lives. The Battle of Somme caused a widespread of trauma and a lot of losses of life.

Battle of Marne - September 5,1914

The Battle of Marne was started to stop schlieffen plan which was to attack and defeat France in the west then fight Russia in the east. His plan was stopped by the french and British by a counter attack by them making the Germans retreat. Both French and Germany suffered from heavy losses with around 250,000 casualties. With the amount of men that went to fight or died in the war women had to take on new roles in the workforce

U.S Joins WW1 - April 6, 1917

The Germans submarine attacks on passengers made Wilson have the U.S join WW1. The U.S joined the Allied powers and helped Britain and France against Germany and Austria. The U.S joining WW1 helped the war end sooner. At the end of the war 53,402 American soldiers died and 63,114 died from accidents and diseases

Russia Surrenders - March 3, 1918

Russia fought against Germany and Austria-Hungary and they faced a lot of losses against them causing it to be one of the reasons they surrendered in WW1. They also had a weak military, few weapons and not enough ammunition so they surrendered with a treaty known as "The Treaty of Brest- Litovsk.Russia's surrender helped Germany focus on the western front which made WW1 have more casualties and fighting. Russia's treaty with Germany made them lose a lot of territory causing there population to be out of place.

Treaty of Versailles- June 28,1919

The treaty of Versailles is peace treaty signed by all who were involved in WW1 to end the war. The treaty required Germany to pay billions for the damage they caused and it also weakened there military to stop them from attacking again. The Germans saw the treaty as unfair and humiliating. The treaty was also unfair to a lot of other countries as they all didn't get what they fought for in WW1 which was one of the reasons why WW2 was started
