This song was written right before the death of his grandmother in 2014. 

His audience is disadvantaged youth who have dreams of changing their circumstances. Sean's purpose of creating this song is to give them advise and encouragement. Went to war, came back alive on top of that became a female black captain when being black, you had to extra-extra try." This uses Ethos because he is talking about his grandma becoming successful when she was at a disadvantage. She was a black female during a time period when they were not treated equally. The next line is "She bought a crib on the same street as Marvin Gaye." This continues to show her success. She started out living in a low end neighborhood in West Virginia but now lives in the same neighborhood as a celebrity. 

Big Sean also demonstrates his credibility by stating "I grinded out that black hole then performed up at the White House." He is explaining that he made something out of nothing. Big Sean started out in a poor and violent environment but worked himself up to the home of the President. The next line was "Standin' next to Jim Carrey, we traded stories, then laughed." He grew up with a brother who sold cocaine outside his window but now he is laughing with celebrities.

My - my step brother used to flip them bags outside the crib like it was trash day." This is showing what happens when you don't work hard. His brother became a drug dealer because he went down a bad path. This scares the audience into wanting to pursue their dreams and work hard.

In lines 21-23 Big Sean says "Look, Think about it, close your eyes, dream about it tell your team about it, go make million dollar schemes about it success is on the way, I feel it in the distance." He is saying that when you know you are working hard and things are turning around, you can dream about your future and plan what you are going to do. Being successful gives you so many options on what to do with your fame and money. Later in the song he says "My grandma told me, 'If you write your name in stone you'll never get the white out.'" His grandma told him to create his own legacy that can never get erased.
