This is a metaphor from From the Ashes by Jesse Thistle. Here, Jesse's Kokum's voice is being compared to warm summer air, in how it sounds smooth, calming and warm.

1. “My brain was drowning in grease” This is a example of hyperbole. He is exaggerating how bad his brain was when he was born. To get his point across that his body wasn’t in good condition when he was born.
2. “I figured he’d okay after some rest, but then...” You think everything is going to be okay until the author hits you with “but then...” things ending up taking a downward spiral from there. It kind of tells you to prepare for something bad coming.
3. “She’s a human tape recorder” The mom is good at reading and reciting what happened in the text she reads. She isn’t really a human tape recorder, she just has really good memory.
