The work of Alfred C. Kinsey was marked as the start of modern scientific studies of human homosexuality. He first published in 1948. Kinsey used a rating scale for both men and women (0 - 6 with O being 100% heterosexual and 6 being 100% homosexual). This rating scale was used to measure and analyze sexual behaviours. He offered new categories defined in terms of sexual arousal (especially orgasm) rather than terms of affection, marriage or relationship. Kinsey introduced an eighth category - "X" which was for individuals who experienced no erotic attractions or activities.

Fausto-Sterling notes that today Kinsey's scale has taken on a life of its own.  Gays and Lesbians are known to refer to themselves by the Kinsey scale.

The validity of these is very questionable. I completed two separate online test to see where I stood on the kinsey scale and one put me at "1" and the other at "4". This indicated to me that one was more inclined to rate a person homosexual than the other.
These test are a concern because if a vulnerable straight person completed this test and it said they were rated a 5, then this might convince them to try homosexuality and the same if the reverse happens. It may be a perfectly accurate measurement of behavior, and it may have worked when the model of psychology was pure behaviorism. But these days, behavior and sexual orientation are seen much more correctly as related but different things. It was a valuable and useful thing when it first came out, because it was one of the first attempts to show that there are plenty of ways to be human other than strict heterosexuality. He argues that it’s time to file it away with Freud’s id/ego/superego as a first, fumbling attempt at quantification that has led to more useful things. It’s a paradigm emeritus, still entitled to audit classes and invited to comment on papers, but its days of teaching classrooms full of freshmen are behind it.  Is he right? \
