Marginalized identities and the intersectionality of identities does impact the school culture if students don't feel a sense of belonging based on their identity.
Stories and community engagement. Some stories ignore the tensions in the communities. African Americans and Latinx are seen as villains and often isolated and kept out of programs. The expectations and the way teachers treat students are based on the historical assumptions. Policies and practices are not automatically part of the structure so we go into with a deficit lens.

The systems and historical policies in place were intentional to the demongraphics/certain races to marginalize them.

On a district level, considering the culture of whiteness: the teaching staff is majority white and the teachers look nothing like the students. There is a disconnect with what families want and need and there are exclusionary practices. There is a lack of policy and lack of “family-first/people-first” practices.

Due to residential redlining, schools or families from white wealthy neighborhoods often have resources that African American and Latinx low-income students do not have. Parents will often have families that can pay for external resources like tutoring as well which can fill gaps.
