The document deals with the Olympic Games in 1968, particularly the 200 meters racethat occurred in Mexico City

The extract focuses on two people who are the African-American athletes, Tommie Smith, whose the winner with 19.78 seconds and John Carlos, who reached the third place.

It is said that Tommmy Smith beat the previous world record so it shows pride for the African American athletes. We can also talk here about the Black Power Salute because in the United States Black People lived in a predicament, they suffered from segregation. During the competition, the INternationnal olympic committee forced their expulsion. What's more, when the two atheltes took a stand on the podium, the public was yelling. It was an outrage for them. Their scream was a way to belittle the sportsmen

causing terrible consequences. Indeed, they were not allowed to compete for the next future games. Besides they both received death threats.

Yet, there is a deep message of solidarity conveyed by the third athlete, the Australian Peter Norman, who bowed his head as a sign of support, besides wearing the humans rights badge.

Then, his act became a symbol after Peter Norman was snobbed by the Autralian National Team. Therefore, we can see a tremendous issues, that is to say : racism and rejection in the United States about the ethnic mixity.

We can consider this era of the seventies as an era of protest because we couldn't imagine a white man such as Peter in spite of all the offensive words pronounced about the two African-American men. Peter Norman didn't let the abuse continue and acted by solidarity, he permitted a struggle demonstration for the humans rights, because no matter their ethnic group, these men all deserve the same respect.

And by respect we talk only not about athletes, but more important, about human being, as men.

Thomas & Laurine

This film shows clearly the heavy burden that Jessie had to carry. He had to face racial inequalities as he was getting more and more athletic and trained. Plus the protagonist's path to sucess was filled with several problems, as He had to make his mind : would he participate to the Olympics, that was set at that time ) in Berlin. Jassy is puzzled, why would he participate to this game, amidst nazism and racism. His mind was twisted, America was going through horrendous and awful, especially for Black people. Why would he represent a such inequal and repressive state, plus, participating to the Olympic would be a form of encouragement for this regime.
