This book explores the idea that people have many differences but are still alike at their core. It stays very focused on this core idea, and sends a strong and important message to young students about diversity and the connections between all people. The target audience for this book could include both students in diverse areas and students in areas where diversity is foreign to young students and needs to be explicitly taught. I would choose this book because of the diversity shown in the illustrations, especially the image that shows a different school environment. This image allows students to see both many similarities and differences between their circumstance and that of others, and the connect between students in a classroom and students in a book is invaluable. I would use this book to show how an author was able to tie in many topics back to one central idea.

This text is perfect for young readers, and it tells a story about the value of perseverance and sends a great message to children about the value of refusing to give up. The book has varied and beautiful sentence structure, such as that seen in the paragraph "Soon night took over. She knew in the dark that the muffled snow was still falling---she could feel it. She was cold and alone in the middle of nowhere. Irene was lost." This paragraph could be used to showcase how sentences of varying lengths and structures can be used to convey different tones in writing, especially the impact the shortness of the sentence "Irene was lost." has on the reader.

This book can reach a diverse audience, both adult and child and of many different backgrounds. This book does an artful job of representing the idea of love in many different ways. It clearly stays on topic but encourages the reader to look beyond standard definitions and into new interpretations of the concept. The sentence "and it's love in the rustling leaves of gnarled trees lined behind the flower field" both challenges and fully embodies the idea of love, and this line could be used to inspire students to define a concept in a nontraditional way.

This poem can reach a wide audience of imaginative minds, including those of young students. While this poem has no plot or story, it still follows a logical progression of time, beginning with describing dusk in varied ways before moving to describing the night and ending with descriptions of dawn. This text shows a unique way of organizing thoughts, beginning with the end of the day and moving forward into the night and onward. This would be a useful text to show students you can start a story in a nontraditional place, and it can also show students there are logical ways to organize thoughts even if there is no story to move through in a text.

Junie B. Jones Loves Handsome Warren by Barbra Park

Park's Junie B. Jones series is known for its distinct voice in writing that showcases the main character's personality in a big way. This series is aimed at transitional readers and is typically more liked by young girls, but the exciting storytelling makes the text a great read for anyone. Chapter 2 of this book contains the excerpt
"Lucille sits next to me in Room Nine.
I kept on being nice to her.
'Cause I wanted to meet that handsome boy, of course.
"Want to be friends again, Lucille? Huh? Want to be friends like we used to be? That would be nice
of us, don't you think?"
"No," said Lucille. "You only want to be friends so you can steal my new boyfriend."
I did a big breath at her.
"Yeah, only how can I even steal him, Lucille?" I asked. "'Cause you are way beautifuller than me.
Remember that? Remember how beautifuller than me you are?"
Lucille remembered.
She fluffed herself.
Then she showed me her new lacy socks."
This excerpt is a great example of voice because it showcases how the main character's personality shines through even when describing other characters, and it emphasizes that voice isn't one character's voice but also the author's voice.

This book is specific in representing young Black boys, but speaks to the universal feeling of loving a new haircut. This book uses strong and varied vocabulary throughout. The line "he'll lean you back in the chair, dab that cool shaving cream on your forehead, and then craft a flawless line with the razor - slow, steady, surgical." shows how word choice can make you feel a specific way. Students could participate in an activity in which they suggest a different set of words after the dash and examine how they change the sentence.

This book contains plain text, stylized text, and comics with speech bubbles, showcasing a variety of formats to writers. The character also uses letters as a combination of drawing and writing, which is why this text could be particularly useful and inspiring to beginning writers. After reading this book, students could complete an activity in which they use multiple styles of writing and text for one scene or short story,

This book sends a message that one should feel free to express themself, and can appeal to wide audiences of struggling children to uninspired adults. This text shows how something small can be built upon in many ways, and when using this book as a mentor text I would focus on the part of the book where the main character finds many different ways to make the simple feature of a dot. After reading, I would have my students each write down a word. Then I would collect the words, shuffle them, and pass the word to a new student. Then the student would have to use the word to create a sentence, then a story related to that word. This activity would show students that one simple idea can be built into something much bigger.

This work can be used to show how strongly imagery can complement text and the complexity that can be added to a story through art. The images that go with the text "true blue" are a great example of how imagery adds so much depth and possibility to words. An activity students could do after reading this book is to pick a phrase from the book and create an entirely new image to pair with it and see how much the image can change then meaning of the text.
