NYSED has required minutes as well. Being in the same room does not "count", what counts is intentional coplanning.

AND another way of looking at it is 'what are you assessing?' If you are assessing mathematical computation, you are assessing (and teaching) math. You would be sheltering content instruction. If you are assessing their application of language of quantity, shape, etc. THEN you are assessing (and teaching) the language. ESL.

DOJ does not have required minutes, instead, USDOE published and recently updated this document: https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/oela/english-learner-toolkit/index.html

How would these models work at the secondary level? Our ELs in grades 6-12 (and in two years grade 5 will move to middle school buildings) see the ELL teacher everyday during a designated ELL class in their block schedule. Staffing requirements may change if you move to a fully integrated, collaborative approach

Andrea Honigsfeld 21m
I would not get rid of the stand alone ELD period for Levels 1-2, this MA state requirement is similar to NYSED's.

See Joel and Lia in action - they use the 6 out of 7 models

Bring your skills to the classroom. Listen to the language of the content. For example, a math teacher may not realize that an equality and inequality sound the same to an EL until you bring it to their attention. A visual representation along with the oral explanation will help the ELL discriminate between the two important concepts. Another example is to write academic sentence frames that are needed ELs to use to communicate their understanding of the concept being taught (i.e. this equation is linear/nonlinear because it is a straight/curved line).

NYSED has required minutes as well. Being in the same room does not "count", what counts is intentional coplanning.

Anonymous 1m
AND another way of looking at it is 'what are you assessing?' If you are assessing mathematical computation, you are assessing (and teaching) math. You would be sheltering content instruction. If you are assessing their application of language of quantity, shape, etc. THEN you are assessing (and teaching) the language. ESL.

Transition from designated ELL class period to co-teaching
Transition from designated ELL class period to co-teaching
How would these models work at the secondary level? Our ELs in grades 6-12 (and in two years grade 5 will move to middle school buildings) see the ELL teacher everyday during a designated ELL class in their block schedule. Would you get rid of these classes completely? And then hope that each student is seen everyday? It seems like the scheduling would be very tricky. Currently, our secondary ELL teachers teach 5 blocks a day out of 7 total
and they are the only ELL teacher in their building.

And in the video with Joel and Lisa...she actually stated "I AM a math teacher!" which illustrated the level of confidence she now feels in working with the mathematics, but it also 'blows the whistle" on what she is actually doing in there: teaching math! Often co-teaching seems at its best when sheltering content instruction, and ELD can get eclipsed in the process. In this case, her words spotlight her loss of identity in the co-teaching relationship

One of our considerations in MA is that our definition of ESL within the sheltered immersion model is designated ESL instructional time, during which ELD is the focus. Often the co-teaching appears to be sheltered content instruction, and not ESL.

Knowing how challenging the building schedules can be, I think maybe I'd get two subs for a day, and free the ESL teacher up all day to meet with the partner teachers who would just cycle through, supported by the other sub. This could happen once a month or so...but it does result in lost instructional time for the ESL students...
