~ The main theme for Act 1 of The Tempest is that those who posses an excessive amount of knowledge on a subject don’t necessarily guarantee themselves a favorable position.

~ The Caliban exclaimed, “You taught me language, and my profit on ’t / Is I know how to curse. The red plague rid you / For learning me your language!” (Shakespeare 1.2.368-370). Caliban is expressing resentment towards Prospero for teaching him his language as he only knows how to curse. Likewise, he is implying harm upon Prospero as the knowledge given to him did not elevate his status, and the Caliban is still under Prospero’s control.

~ The main theme for Act 1 of The Tempest is that you should look at an event from all sides because you don't know what somebody else is going through unless you've experienced it yourself. Individuals that are exposed to their surroundings are...

~ For example, When Prospero was explaining his story of how they appeared on the ship, Miranda exclaimed, “Alack, for pity! / I, not remembering how I cried out then, / Will cry it over again. It is a hint / That wrings mine eyes to ‘t” (Shakespeare 1.2.155-158). When Prospero was talking to Miranda about how they got on the ship in the first place, he mentioned all of the difficulties he had to endure as Antonio started to become the King of Naples behind his back. Miranda did not know what her father had to endure until this story and she felt bad for him that he had to go through that, especially since Antonio was his brother.

~ The main theme of Act 1 of The Tempest is that individuals who display pride because of their societal role reflect negativity on those who are less fortunate.

~ For instance, Sebastian yells at the Boatswain saying what “a pox o' your throat, you bawling, blasphemous, / incharitable dog!” (Shakespeare 1.1.40). Sebastian expressing his prideful and arrogant manner upon one of the helpers on the ship. His unkind words towards the Boatswain seem to be connected to his perceived authority as a noble on board the ship.
