The school began as the Mixed Primary School "Ştefan cel Mare" in 1865, serving the working-class neighborhoods of Cărămidăria and Popăuţi. Despite the area's poverty, the school met the pressing need for a local educational institution. Its early years are shrouded in uncertainty until 1925, when it experienced a major milestone — a new building dedicated exclusively to education. Rebranded as Mixed School "Ştefan cel Mare" No. 1, it became a modern and functional center of learning near the Popăuţi Monastery.

1948 Reform - Following the education reforms of 1948, the school became General School No. 5. This period marked significant upgrades, including the extension of its facilities with a new wing containing two classrooms.

1954 Expansion - Given the vast student base stretching to Manoleşti Deal, the school operated across two locations and was renamed 7-Year School No. 5.

1962 Adjustment - With the transition to 8 years of free, mandatory education, the school adopted the name "8-Year General School No. 5," continuing to serve the expanded community.

During the 1980s, community demand facilitated the school's relocation to a new building on General Avrămescu Street in 1983. Renamed General School No. 14, it continued its mission of providing quality education. By 1998, its historic name, "Ştefan cel Mare," was restored. The occasion was marked by the addition of a remarkable equestrian statue of the great medieval ruler, Ştefan cel Mare, created by renowned sculptor Mihai Buculei.

Beyond its academic role, the school is a symbol of Botoşani's cultural heritage. This legacy was immortalized in 2006 through the publication of its monograph, a detailed historical account authored by dedicated teachers Valerian Crîşmariu, Dan-Dragoş Crîşmariu, and Elena Dămii. The book celebrates the school as one of the region’s first educational institutions and honors its enduring contribution to the community.
