The speaker of Sleep on the Floor by the Lumineers is a boyfriend talking to his girlfriend. However the voice of this song is Wesley Shultz he tells the story of a couple packing up everything and leaving. The occasion of this song is directly correlated to what the band was experiencing. The Lumineers wrote this song to show that packing up and leaving to big cities does not mean things are promised. The Lumineers were starting there tour and they started to pick up attention and traction but struggled to find venues and ran into many roadblocks just as the couple does in the song. The audience of this piece is people who have big ambitions. The Lumineers wrote this piece to show that it is great to have big ambitions on moving to big cities however not everything is promised or given. They show this through examples in the videos like running out of gas, sleeping on the floor, or even missing the train. It is great to dream big and aim for the skies but just don't forget what could hold you back. The purpose of this piece was to show the idea that moving to big cities and starting a new life is difficult but you must remain optimistic. Another main idea of this song is to not get stuck. A lyric in the song that explains this is "I was not born to drown". He sings this to show that he needed to leave and get out of a small town with no opportunities to grow. The tone of this piece is very optimistic.

Love on The Floor by the Lumineers portrays the idea that packing up and leaving everything behind is not easy. They do this through rhetoric; using tools like, pathos, ethos, logos, imagery, tone of voice and many other methods to portray this idea.

The Lumineers use emotion and tone to tell a story in this songs. The first example of pathos in this song is "Will you lay yourself down and dig your grave or will you rail against your dying day?". This is an example of figurative language and is meaning "Will you give up? or will you keep fighting?". This question makes you feel scared but yet feel a sense of optimism. This feeling is portrayed multiple times in the song. Through the lyrics in the song we hear hardships such as "How do you pay the rent, is it your parents?". This example compares with the first quote. Even if you can't pay rent will you keep fighting till the end. These quotes give us a sense of scared optimism. Not knowing what will happen in the future is scary however, if you keep fighting you can say you tried. I believe this was the main emotion the Lumineers were trying to show through this song. If hardships come will you keep fighting?

Ethos in the song Sleep on the Floor is shown through lyrics in the song. One example is "Forget what Father Brennan said we were not born in sin". This is an example of ethos in the song, he is trying to convince us that "we were not born in sin" because life should not be worrying about if we are sinning. Although I disagree with this statement he is trying to convey a message. Another example of ethos in this song is "Jesus Christ cant save me tonight". This an extreme hyperbole, Jesus Christ can save anyone. However the speaker is trying to show that life is so bad not even Jesus could save him. Although Jesus can save anyone he is using ethos tactics to get a point across. The Lumineers used ethos in the lyrics of this song to show low points and use hyperbolas to exaggerate how bad your life can get.

Logos in this song is shown in an a way that the other appeals don't show. The first example of logos in Sleep on the Floor is "I don't wanna live like this". This is a straight fact that we know, he does not want to live like this. He does not want "hold the atmosphere" he just wants to live his life in a small town holding up his whole world. This appeal shows us that he does not want to live in this small town forever he wants to get out and see the world. We know this is logos because he is stating it for a fact. Another example of logos in the lyrics of this song is "Cause if we do not leave this town we might never make it out". Although we can not tell this to be a fact, in his opinion its fact. If they don't leave the small town early enough, they might live like that forever. We also know from the quote above that he "doesn't wanna live like this". Logos was used in this song to show that he doesn't want a live a boring life, he wants to leave.

The song Sleep on the Floor uses lyrics and visuals to show that packing up everything, leaving to a new city, and having no problems will not happen. The goal of this song is to show that hardships will happen but its how you treat them is what makes you who you are. This song is effective in showing that there is optimism in dark spots. Overall The Lumineers wrote this song to show that moving is not easy and you will face hardships, noting is promised.
