Malcolm X was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. His father, Earl Little, was a preacher and a member of the Universal Negro Improvement Association. Before he was born and as a child, members of the KKK would come to his home with rifles yelling for his father to come out of the house. After dropping out of school at 15, Malcolm moved to Boston with his half sister where he began selling drugs. In 1946, Malcolm was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison. While in prison, his siblings who had joined the Nation of Islam visited often and later helped him convert to the Nation of Islam. After his release from prison, he began to work with Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam, and later established Muhammad Speaks, a national newspaper. Malcolm promoted the idea of putting an end to racism by using violence and any other means necessary. In the year 1964, he left the Nation of Islam because he felt betrayed and he upset Elijah with his harsh comments towards the assassination of JFK. After spending time in Mecca, Malcolm realized his radical ways were unnecessary and decided to change his views. Sadly, on February 21, 1965, he was assassinated by members of the Nation of Islam while speaking at a rally in New York.
