The Power of a Single Story

Both Their Eyes Were Watching God and this talk express the ideas of bias's and the importance of not making assumptions before learning the whole story. Even today, especially with the media, society is prone to believing the first story that they hear. This creates stereotypes of everything our society assumes. In the video she talks about how the books she read as a child consisted of males with blonde hair and blue eyes. This a typical stereotype of an ordinary male that society has created. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, the largest stereotype was that women were expected to only be a housewife and follow what their husbands asked of them. Most stereotypes have some truths to them, but only because society has created them to be accurate. As a whole, our society has a problem with believing everything we hear and creating our own bias's against people.

Their Eyes Were Watching God is written around Janie trying to find her voice. Within this process she is forced to live a life that she doesn't want to live. This poem describes the day of a slave and their emotions, where they had no say in what they were doing. The overall message of this poem is the thoughts of the slaves in this time period. Their fear and loss of hope is what this poem is conveying. Slavery was present for many years in the United States, therefore making it seem like it was normal. This poem exposes the real treatment of African Americans, and Their Eyes Were Watching God also does this when they are burying the dead after the hurricane, and the white people got coffins while the African Americans got thrown into a hole. Both the book and this poem express the harsh treatment of African Americans in this country.

What is White Privilege, Really?

This article addresses the unseen issues of white privilege in our country. We normally don't notice differences between all races in our country because we are past the time of large racism overall in our country. However, what a lot of people don't recognize is how privileged white people are in our country. Many other races see themselves as having disadvantages because the white races have so many advantages that we don't see ourselves, because we are so prone to them. As a whole, we should be more conscious of the advantages the white race has, and be willing to lift some of the problems with other races as well. The white race doesn't have to deal with racism, or many biases at all. We are the ones who put that on other races. Collectively, the race needs to change and acknowledge how many advantages we have in our society.

Like many others, this article is an eye opener to the issues relating to white privilege. White privilege is goes unnoticed in our country because it is so common to us. This article, along with "What is White Privilege Really?", makes us see how entitled the race is and how nobody really notices it. It has become a part of our society that white people may gain things easier, or in general don't have to fight for as many problems that other races have to deal with. This article also presents an issue that is current in our country: racism. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, there is a large issue with racism during Janie's trial, and whenever they encounter a white person. Not only is this an issue in this story, but this is still evident throughout our country today. As a collective group, the white race is blind to their advantages in society because it is just the way all of us were raised and taught.

How to Overcome Our Biases

Biases are a large part of our society today, and even in the past. This talk clearly explains the biases that we (white people) have against African Americans, and how we are schooled to have them always in our brains. Our country is built off of our own biases. We are almost programmed to think them, and act on them. There have been many events where biases have been taken out on African Americans, especially young black men. Almost all of these events resulted in the murder of that young black male. This is because of the ideas that we have built into our heads collectively. She talks about how we all have a "default". For her, and i'm sure many others, its men. Whenever there is a problem or an issue, a lot of people lean towards men. This is unspoken in Their Eyes Were Watching God, but it is clear that at various parts of the book that it is expected that a man will fix the problem or conflict.

Women's March on Washington

Gloria Steinem was a very large part of the feminist movement in the sixties and seventies. In 2016, she spoke at the Women's March on Washington, after President Trump was inaugurated. Gender inequality has been a large issue in this country since it was created, and is still a largely debated topic today. When President Trump was elected he said very controversial statements about females. This was the leading factor for the women of this country to get together and march for ourselves. Steinem builds on the idea that women have to stick together and stand up for their rights. This is a consistent concept in this country because women are often discriminated against. There has always been this "idea" that women cannot accomplish as much as men or cannot participate in the same activities. Marches like this, and many others send a message to the country that men and women are equal and one should never overpower the other.

Pay Gap

There are many people in this country, and the world, that feel that men dominate over women. Although this article is not written about the United States, it still shows important facts about men being payed more than women in different circumstances. The article says, "According to Ontario's Pay Equity Commission, about 10 to 15 percent of the pay gap is due to discrimination"(Chiu). This is also a true factor in the United States. There is no reason why women should get payed less then men for accomplishing the same jobs. There is also no reason for anyone to discriminate against women just because of stereotypes that have been built up over time. There is still a large discrimination towards women that is evident everywhere, including Their Eyes Were Watching God. Women are seen as just "housewives" in this book, and sadly today some people still view women like this.

Many more feminism movements have started up due to the presidential elections in 2016. This article talks about the book "Modern HERstory" and the different parts to it. It also talks about how disregarded women are for the work that they accomplish. Feminism today is a largely debated subject for a few reasons. One of these reasons is that some people think that feminism is about making women dominate over men. Another is that some people find it is very over exaggerated, and a waste of time. Now, everyone has their own opinions, which is how our country the way it is today. Personally, I do not agree with these reasons. Society has always looked down upon women in some sort of way. Yes, there has been progression towards equality over the years, but discrimination is still seen in our country today. Another debated topic in this article, and around the world is the LGBTQ. There are many people that do not accept this group, and refuse to let people be who they want to be. As a whole discrimination against anyone should be minimized, whether its in the United States, or all around the world.

This talk opened up my eyes about the role that women play in social media. Johanna Blakley predicts the future of social media and women involvement in it. It gives us a modern view of the idea of gender roles and how they have evolved over time. The media has become a very powerful tool that can change people's views and perceptions. Blakley argues that a balance of gender is very important when informing the public through social media. Currently, most TV and media is run by men, so we only get to see one point of view. With the entry of women into the media, more ideas would be presented and a wider impact would be created on our thinking patterns.

Michael Kimmel is talking about equality between men and women in the workplace and at home. He talks about the biases between men and women , and how they will always be present. However, he's not talking about who is better or who can get one over another, he's talking about fairness and making life better for all of us. He says, "Those countries that are the most gender equal, are also the countries that score highest on the happiness scale." This quote stood out to me because it proves that a change needs to be made. Women and men should be equal, one should never dominate over the other.
